When I press the power switch, I could hear the start up sound, the screen lights up (white) for a second or 2 and then turns black. The indicator light on the bottom-right side lights and went off completely.

On closer look, found that the screen still shows but it's extremely dim, you can hardly see anything if you don't look at it carefully. Tried the f2 and f1 key without effect. Is the screen's backlight gone, or something else?

Removed the battery, plugged out the power cord, pressed the ON button for 5 seconds, put them back on doesn't help.

If I leave it ON long enough, (say, about 10 minutes) I could see the Windows log on screen (changed to Windows OS) comes ON for a second or so and then went black.

Mac experts, what shall I do next?

Cheers

When you say you used windows and the screen comes on are you saying it operated normally or your could see the dark outline?

Regardless, try plugging in to an external screen. If all functions normally its a back light problem. From your description it sounds like the back light but just to be certain test on an external monitor

Yeah try and external screen first. If the same thing happens on an external screen the logic board is probably fried (depending on the model of macbook).

Specs please. Have you tried shining a light on the screen. Could be ram. Have you a monitor you can hook up too it?

I've got an external monitor but it doesn't seem to match the macbook - the connecter is different!

Tried the two links - no, don't work.

Must be too expensive to send for repair.

Macbook's use a Mini displayport type adaptor thing don't they?

http://store.apple.com/nz/product/MC552ZM/B/apple-vga-adapter this little non standard thingy that costs $50. You'll need that to connect the VGA/DVI/HDMI out from the lappy to the monitor

EDIT: Oops wrong thing, that's an iPod one. You want this and it's only $20!! http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A/apple-mini-dvi-to-vga-adapter (and I think Mini DVI IS a standard port )

Depending on the model of the macbook, (2010 Macbooks had / have this prob) this is a known prob, with some of the onboard graphics.

This maybe the cause (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gOUnddFXkQ)

Some people noticed this after updating to Lion as well. Which meant, the macbook had a hardware fault

Here's one of the apple forums, talking about the black screen (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3191083?start=0&tstart=0)

By luck (?), I pressed the ON button last night and left it there for about 5 minuites and like magic, the screen came back to live!

But, when I pressed the button this morning, the screen remains BLACK but I could hear that Windows was loading normally. Repeated all those suggestions on the net but just could not get it back to live.

Give up.
