This may or may not help -- http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/showthread.php?127283-MS-updates-not-working-on-Vista have a read of method number 8 in the link from feersumendjinn ( post #2), Personally when ever windows wont update, what ever version I always do that step.

The majority of the time it fixes the problem. Sometimes it doesn't.

I get access denied after entering Ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

I ran it as admin

Should I try safe mode?

yep, try safe mode, sometimes you have to.

Normally I do it slightly different to the instructions, I actually cut/paste the SoftwareDistribution folder to another location, instead of renaming, say the desktop, then once working you can delete it.

In normal mode you HAVE to run the stop the windows service command as administrator, if the service is not stopped it wont work.

Running in safe mode, the service doesn't actually start, thats why you cant update windows in safe mode, you should be able to rename the folder without any problems in safe mode, restart normally then try the updates again.

Edited: when you ran the CMD commands did the service actually stop?

You should the message exactly like the pic below ( word for word)

It worked.Thank you wainuitech.Only 47 updates to install.

Good its working :)

In non technical terms, something gets corrupted or "stuck" in the folder.

Learnt from experience, don't muck about, try the quickest first with that problem, if that fails then roll up the sleeves ;)

I'm pleased I asked on this site. The other sites looked too technical for me with mixed results. Thanks again.

I know what you mean with sites getting too technical... Just because windows wont update doesnt mean you need to reverse engineer my entire os .

look in the reign settings in the control panel, make sure its not set to English UK instead of English NZ or US.

problem solved the settings were set to english uk now i have set it to english nz and all is working fine, Seems odd to me that this new os chooses english uk as the default setting.
