After a power outage
the computer boots with BSOD stop error code 0x0000007E; portcls.sys address B590346d
will not boot into safe mode
last known good confirguration: makes no difference
diagnostics of both ram & hdd: passed

any suggestions of how to get the computer to boot?

Thank you!

Looks like that file belongs to the audio drivers. Try disabling the sound in the BIOS. Then uninstall its drivers, if it boots into windows. If it does, download the drivers again. Then reboot. See if you can still get into windows. It didnt happen after installing SP3 did it? If XP is on it

Try connecting the hdd to a working system, get access to the hdd. Find portcls.sys, rename it. Then put it back in the system that crashes. Enable the sound in the BIOS again. See if it gets into windows. If it does, if sound drivers are installed uninstall them. portcls.sys is probably corrupt. Then try reinstalling the sound drivers again

If you want once the scan finishes, leave the hdd connected. And I can check it out with teamviewer. If you cant take ownership of the connected hdd

Give me another id and password NZhawk. I'll have another look. Looks like that can appear, if something is missing or corrupt. What was the malware/infection you removed?
