I usually try to buy NZ made but when you see a company like Sanitarium trying to bankrupt a shop in Nelson because they dared to bring some British special addition of Ma'mite then they can go to hell..

I agree with you there, especially as they can't even supply their own Marmite!

Here is (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10816412) another reason not to like them.

Not only that, but being wholly owned by the Seventh Day Adventists, they do not pay any company tax on profits.

Oh I see Mike posted the same thing, my blue.

My TV is a very old Philips that was made in NZ. I challenge anyone to find a NZ made TV set (or any other consumer electronics item) now!

Getting back to buying NZ products if you like them....

And for those of you who do not "like" Facebook
I think the guy who started the Facebook page is going to set up a website.

And I just noticed on the Alexa website that Facebook is now the most popular website in the world having overtaken Google as number !

Just what everyday items are made in NZ now
apart from food & specialist/boutique clothing ?

plinius amps

expensive esoteric amps are hardly consumer electronic items .
Do my home made speakers count , what if I sell 1 (just kidding)

But honestly, thats all NZ can realistically make(sell) now, specialized items sold in low volumes .

G Facebook is now the most popular website in the world having overtaken Google as number !
So the sheeple flock to it...they run Nortons, download malware and haven't got a clue in other ways too....doesn't mean we all must.

This thread is about NZ produce and products.

May be you should start an I hate Facebook thread?

I think the guy who started the Facebook page will be setting up a website as well.

It seems to me that NZ lacks National Pride! Take for example PDL electrical fittings were made here, until some accountant decided that they could make more money by having them made cheaply overseas. Never mind the fact that hundreds of people were put out of work. Same applies to Fisher & Paykel, Pye, Philips and Masport. The lack of government control on overseas spending is pathetic, allowing everyone who wishes to make a fast buck to import any rubbish he wants. It would make more sense to promote local industry, and subsidize it if necessary, cheaper than the dole. and busy people don't get sick. We import 100's of new cars, yet the yards are full of perfectly serviceable used cars. For goodness sake, the speed limit is 100K, we don't need fast powerful cars. When did you last see a "buy NZ made" campaign?

@Mzee

You may some very good points.

Some things are just not possible or practical or sensible to make in NZ.
We are a Very small market.
With modern production methods factories can make so much stuff these days in a very short space of time.

And as you said, every factory that closes (closed) is lots of people out of work and on the dole or off to Australia, especialli in small towns.

I think the reason there are no Buy NZ campaigns any more is two fold.

1 They did not work, as people kept buying cheaper overseas made stuff
2 There are not enough large companies still making stuff in NZ to support a campaign.

Look at that poll on todays The Herald Online.
Most people said they like to buy NZ made, but they did not!

But its a global problem..
