Ok i have lots of questions,

My son wants one for his birthday............ we are looking at options....... share $$.

What size should i go for? and what things do i need to know before i buy?

I presume it comes with one controller, and no games? unless you get a bundle special.
Up till now we have been tried and true play station family. we have recently been introduced to xbox...

Help please....

Just buy whatever is cheapest. I wouldn't recommend spending up large on a 7 year old piece of hardware. With an xbox you generally get: 1 Controller with 2xAA batteries, headset and depending on where you buy it from you might get a bundled game too. The come in 4gb or 120?gb models. You can upgrade the harddrive though. I would recommend buying a plug and play kit, the controller just chews threw the AA batteries, rechargeable packs are basically a must. Just dont buy a $30+ one. Oh and microsoft wants you to pay to play online as well (unlike sony).

I have two older style xbox's I'm getting rid of, a heap of games, a MS wireless steering wheel, 2 of those plastic guitars, a set of drums, a microphone....

I'd avoid the 4GB ones, simply because 4GB is bugger all and it's not a significant price difference to jump to the 250GB. Not convinced the 320GB is worth the extra $$, they seem to be about $100 - $120 more than the 250.

Get him a book.

Agree that 4GB is nothing. Gold accounts are ridiculously expensive, so I hope he doesn't want to play online.
I have found the Xbox Live Arcade has a lot of really good games (and usually at a reasonable price), but a young male is probably only interested in Call of Duty & similar games.

How old is old mets?

To be honest I wouldn't recommend a used xbox, notoriously unreliable. So forget I mentioned it.

I just bought myself the 250GB version with 3 games for $380.

You can get an Xbox with 2 games + 3 mths Xbox live for $399 at Dick Smith. (http://www.dicksmith.co.nz/product/YG5588/xbox-360-250gb-console-halo-reach-fable-3-3-month-xbox-live-card) And yup, I wouldnt get one 2nd hand. In case its been banned from anyone playing it online. Then, you'll have to spend more $ to get another Xbox

I've still got a 60gb one, though I don't play it much atm.
I don't recommend getting the 4gb ones without buying the extra HDD for them, they're either 250gb or 320gb, which should be enough since we don't get things like netflix and all the apps americans get.

The suggestion is we'll see a new one next year or something, but at the price point they're at now you can't really go wrong. Plus they're yet to release Halo4 which should be pretty good.

I suggest you ignore kinect though. For the most part, it's a gimmicky bugger of a thing, and people feel awkward using it. (see here:http://penny-arcade.com/patv/show/extra-credits) and check the videos, in particular, 'kinect disconnect'.

If you get one with a sensor cheap enough, fine. If you can get one without it and save a bit of money, go for that. Mightyape can do you good deals on games when they have sales too.

Though I did see almost the same package at the warehouse

Ninja'd by speedy. That's pretty much what I was talking about.

I was severely disappointed with my new purchase when I discovered I couldn't store any of my media on my xbox, Imo it makes the large harddrive pointless.

250 Gb that I would have to fill with purchases from xbox live?

Hell no.

Is it essential to be online?

Why cant you save media / games ?

Got kids?

Had a room full of 8 year olds almost destroy my house a couple days ago playing Kinect Star Wars. Judging from the amount of noise they made they enjoyed it.

Of course, They also make a huge amount wrestling on the trampoline.....

I've got the same Xbox as you 8ft. But, with the Kinect. Havent had any probs with the Kinect YET. Only game I've used it for is Forza 4 and the Adventures game. Only other thing I would use the Kinect for would be video for Skype when its out, and Party invites. I use it more as a media centre / player than playing games on it. I just convert everything to MP4. I think I'll get a wireless adapter for it soon. If this replacement modem/router doesnt stuff up

I don't allow my kids online access with the xbox.

I had intended to store all my music and a selection of movies on my xbox, It simply doesn't allow the transfer of this sort of media to the xbox, You can rip cd's but that's about all, But I'm not about to rip my entire cd collection a second time.

Well no, it doesnt have to go online, but if you use / or like Facebook, and Youtube (you have to pay for both). It needs to be online to do it. And Skype (which isnt available YET). But, will be in the near future. Thats what I use it for sometimes (FB, Youtube, and Vevo). At least its a lot cheaper than buying a TV with these features on it

24-07-2012, 09:56 PM
It's more for storing downloaded TV in the US and generally installing games to the harddrive to save the DVD drive (still need the disc but the disc isn't used to play the game)

It's not 'essential' to be online, I've still got 1 month free of Xbox live from 2009, but it does make things more interesting being able to play with others.
I haven't ever been able to justify use of live myself since I haven't had enough games that I play online.

Good thing is with the new console supposedly coming out soon all the games will drop in price.... the bad thing is not as many new titles on the current hardware

You can use it with Win7. I've used it to stream MP4 files / videos / MP3 files and Windows media centre (with this freeview tuner). Works fine.

24-07-2012, 10:10 PM
Streaming is pretty retarded when you have a big juicy harddrive sitting empty on the device you are streaming to. Might as well just run a cable from the PC to the amp and not bother with a redundant step.

If I had realised at purchase that the entire 250gb was a waste of time I would have bought a PS3.

24-07-2012, 11:31 PM
I think you should buy a new Xbox. Or you can give a different type gifts that matches his age.

We have a ps2, we got lent a xbox, and then they took it away when he hired some games for it, so we have a weeks worth of games and no xbox at the moment....... but it has been on the cards to get one, he is just working out how to pay for it, his birthday next month.... so he is trying to save, talk nicely to me, and get hold of his dad to to get some money off him...lol
so its on the cards.
Any one in wanga's got a xbox we could borrow for a week? so we can use the games he hired? sigh....
Oh and yeah going online is not really a big deal atm, just getting an xbox will be the icing on the cake.
thanks every one for there input, its been helpful.
