So I am looking at getting a PCIe raid card for my pc, I am currently looking at a MegaRaid one but a mate said Promise are the best raid cards.
Any help and information would be great.

Yea there's raid cards and then there's raid cards. :D
How much do you want to spend?
The cheaper ones will just be basic raid like most onboard raid, that a lot of mainboards have built in, and will probably only do raid 0 or 1.
The better more expensive raid cards have cache ram, their own processor, and you can sometimes upgrade the cache ram plus will do raid 5 etc.

It doesn't seem to be that good if you're writing to the disks a lot: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/lsi-megaraid-sas8708em2_12.html

I would choose LSI over Promise any day, but if you're willing to spend some money, look at Areca or 3ware cards.

Another alternative which seems to be working for some people, is to pick up oldish Dell Perc cards off ebay.

What do you want it for? What RAID levels do you need? SAS or SATA or both? How many drives?

I want it for raid.
Im thinking raid 5, either right now, not sure on the amount of drives, as much as the card takes

Use raid 10 otherwise you will be doomed to either fast scary raid or slow reliable raid.

I want raid 5 so if a drive fails i have the redundancy to remove it then replace it and not lose the data.
