View Full Version : Addition of +1 - please vote

We're considering the addition of a +1 button, which would be added to each post on the forums. for more detail, see here http://www.google.com/+1/button/ and here http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=265975

I'm personally all for it! It's a lot more universal than a "like" or a "thanks".

EDIT: Glad to see the time is also back on-track :D

Brings out the Luddite in me. :badpc:

*Do we really need to add this to the forum?

*What real and actual value will it add?

I belong to other Forums that use the same software and they are nowhere near as simple and logical to use as PF1, and that is without adding +1 [why don't they just call it 'me too'?].

It violates the KISS principle as well, which has long been a fundamental reason why this Forum has worked so well for so many years, and why so many Forum websites are impenetrably obtuse.

Cheers

Beats then having to write a post straight afterwards saying "Yeah me too, well said".

Also for solutions you can skim down a page and see that XYZ person got given 5 +1's for their suggestion but the second suggestion got 27 +1's... I'd try the second suggestion first in this case if it was me.

I'm all for +1, I'm hoping google will start ranking things based on it's "+1" ish ness. On a wishful thinking scale A simple -1 would be good too, that way helpful and unhelpful posts could be ranked. As far as forum speed is concerned, pulling the API from google is much quicker than loading all the "+1" posts. Saves forum clutter too.

On another level altogether, it is possible for us to somehow highlight a best answer or mark a question as "Solved" when a solution is found to a problem?

Anyway, good to see some new features.

All its gonna do is clutter up the pages, you get people putting +1 in a post, and you are going to quickly have a whole page of crap with only +1 on it.
Just looking at this page now, theres 9 replies before this one and only 1 line of text in each ( and 1 picture) what a mess. When pages end up like this they are often skimmed over and threads end up being many pages long with nothing but dribble.

The only way that will work and keep it cleaner is if the original post has a counter on it, so if someone hits +1 then it adds up the totals.

Potentially, you'll have stupid threads occasionally that nobody visits.

However I'd suggest that rather than the posts like "Yeah I agree with XYZ", it'd be far easier to just +1 somebodies post than to commend, meaning *less* useless fluff and more focus on the actual issue / resolution at hand?

wainuitech

useless fluff and more focus on the actual issue / resolution at hand? That doesn't happen now ;) Many threads start off with a question and by the time they slow down it can be a completely different topic from the start.

Wouldnt it be better to have posts like "Yeah, I agree with XYZ"? It takes a bit more effort and actually means something because you have taken the time to write it. Having a +1 button is easier, it is too easy, all it will do is raise a members post count up easier and make them look like they are useful. ChazTheGeek will be on about 12,000 by Christmas and hot on his heals with be stratex5 (or the other way around).

It would be ok if the feature could be turned off and posts with nothing but that in it could be omitted from being viewed in a thread so the garbage is filtered out and you could focus on the issue/conversation at hand.

My thoughts anyway.

I think some people are misunderstanding how it works.

It's not a post that just includes "+1". It's on the side of every post (Or near the subject line), similar to how other forums such as xda-developers do a "Thanks", or other places do a Karma rating.
When you +1 a post, it doesn't post anything extra, and certainly won't increase your post-count. As a poster, you get nothing from it short of helping other people to easily see that you've "agreed" with a post and that when others later come to skim through a thread, that a specific response holds more weight than the other responses.

So I guess you can only "vote" one time (thank goodness for that, I could see it getting quite high by a few certain members otherwise).
Now, do we get a minus 1 option there to subtract the plus 1's for when a totally useless post is made (wont mention names) and it gets 2 +1's and the other 200 of us active ones want to add a -1 to it lol :D

Chilling_Silence
22-06-2012, 10:49 PM
Straxex5 and ChazTheGeek both know they need to lighten up on the spammy posts... we're hoping the +1 will be seen more as a positive thing, much in the same way Google only has a +1, not a -1, and same for Facebook only having a "Like" button... Only +1 is more universal for agreeing with something that somebody dislikes for example.

Actually it's more the Forums way of showing: What this user said has been well-regarded by other readers of the forum.

We could potentially include Facebook "Likes" as well, but a +1 is more universal if somebody is expressing displeasure for something, amongst other things. On top of that, most forum members here don't regard Facebook in such high esteem compared to Google+.

We're open to constructive suggestions / feedback though.

Oh god, no. Basically Google's way of spamming their Google Plus social network.

Lol Did you join PF1 just to share this post? :groan:

A +1 is a combination of agreeing and/or liking ones post without a million new posts stating "I agree" or "me too" or even "+1" - and it's a simple click of the button. :2cents:

We could potentially include Facebook "Likes" as well, but a +1 is more universal if somebody is expressing displeasure for something, amongst other things. On top of that, most forum members here don't regard Facebook in such high esteem compared to Google+.

We're open to constructive suggestions / feedback though.

I know irony but +1... :banana

I noticed on "transformerforums.com/forum", each post has a 'like' and 'share' button. Is that kind of what you're looking for Chill?

Yeah, but a +1 button on each post that's unique to each post. When I had it, it would +1 the whole entire page, not the individual post....

Not at all. I'll be able to whip together the +1 for the new forums in no time at all, it's a lot easier to mod than vBulletin :)
