Is it true when you purchase a laptop from some retail store you get both Windows 7 32 and 64 bit versions and can choose from either when you need to reinstall windows? Somebody told me this during the week but don't know how true it is.

It has been true in some cases.

However, it is far more likely the new computer will be 64 bit, and will have only Win7 64 bit installed.

Unlesws you're using older hardware/peripherals/software there is little merit to staying with 32 bit kit.

The latest HP Probooks I have setup come with both 32 and 64bit disks - pretty good for HP I thought as you dont even have to create recovery media. Downside is that by default it installs the 32bit one, to install the 64bit you would have to re-install from disk.

I seem to remember with some (altough I cant remember which), it gives you the option at initial setup if you want to install 32bit version or the 64bit one. And some just install 64bit straight off as Paul said.

Toshiba let you pick when you first start their laptops.

Not necessarily true if it is a Windows 7 basic job.

When I did a system recovery it was Windows 7 64bit. Didn't see any option for installing 32bit not that I would want to.

If you wait a little, you will be offered a Windows 8 upgrade for very little for a new purchase

Don't know if would be an advantage or a backward step for a desktop:badpc:

My Dell Vostro came with W7 32&64 bit on a CD. Also had a CD with XP pro SP3. These are all full versions, not rescue discs.
