I need to back up a laptop hard drive, reinstall windows, then put back as much data and programs on to the new windows install as possible.

I have space on my main PC to hold the whole hard drive

Could someone recommend some disk imaging software that I can use to create an image of the drive on my main PC?
And preferably be able to pull out individual files from the image, etc...

Shadow protect will image the drive, the 30 day trial should cover you. You can then mount and copy files as required...

I've used Acronis true image since about 2007. Can do what you want.

An image isn't what you want, that's to clone it. As you are doing a fresh install, just back up your stuff. Install the apps again then just move the personal stuff back over.
