View Full Version : Switch OEM XP to new HDD

What's the best way to get XP to a new disk when you haven't got the install CD? The current C: drive has 4KB bad blocks and index errors are being fixed every time I run chkdsk so that doesn't look good.

It's an OEM NEC machine about 6 yrs old and it has a recovery partition.

I experimented with restoring the C: image to another drive and I got it working but the errors and bad blocks came with it (not surprising)!

Get the ISO off the recovery partition then burn it. Then either format the hdd or buy another hdd

There is no ISO, unfortunately.

Was anything in the recovery partition?? If its hidden you'll have to show hidden / system files. To see anything in its folder

If it has a recovery partition, you should be able to create a set of factory recovery disks.

Clone the recovery partition over to the new HDD and run the restore program?

(If you can't make it create rescue disks etc)

Active @ clones drives with errors...

Active @ clones drives with errors...

Just to clarify, it can clone drives that contain errors, it does not create an error-filled clone?

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. I've got them saved. The owner is running, as is, but making sure he has frequent data backups. They are talking of replacing it with a new laptop so, hopefully, that happens before the disk craps out!

Would probably try restoring the recovery image to a new drive and seeing if I could get it to start in recovery mode.

@Speedy. No trouble seeing the heaps of files in that partition.
