I have just moved into a new house and want to stream audio to some speakers which are on top of some tall kitchen cupboards (need a ladder to get to the top). I can run power to the top of these cupboards easily enough as there is a power point within the cupboard for some reason.

The audio would come from a pc which sits on a benchtop and is 8m from where I want to place the speakers. Audio would be a mix of flac, mp3, internet radio.
Ideally would like to be able to change volume on the pc. Might be useful if could also connect the macbook pro the other half has.

Cheapest option I can think of is to get an old stereo and put it on top of the cupboards, plug a streamer device into the aux in and use the stereo remote to change the volume.

Not very elegant though. Are than any devices that I can plug some good quality speakers into or must I have a separate amp.

What other options are people using?

A.

What about one of those small media boxes like the WD one or similar assuming they can do wireless
