6450... because it is better.

Neither because they are both a waste of money.

You'd be better off saving up a bit more and getting a second hand 4850/70 for like $95/110 from GP.

I'm not up with ATI cards, but at that price they wouldn't be much good for gaming. Look at spending between $300 to $500 if you are into gaming.

The 6450 is twice as powerful but neither is a gaming card. It would be a good Idea if you told us what you hope to achieve and at what sort of price then we could offer some better advice.
Also my personal opinions are always proper :P

The newer one - the 6450, and Gigabyte is a good brand.

ChazTheGeek
02-06-2012, 07:42 PM
6450, it's not that good though, a better option would be the GeForce gt520 probably the best low profile card at a reasonable price http://www.pp.co.nz/products.php?pp_id=AA31775

It's not to bad a card as I can play Rage on highest graphics, Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Burnout Paradise, Far Cry 2 (on Medium graphics) , Crysis (on Medium graphics).......pretty good for the price.

icow

At what resolution are you playing rage on? Your CPU and graphics card are only just above the minimum.

Dude, get a GT 520 it's better than 5450, it's round about the same price and it is usually 1GB DDR3.

GT 520 Specs:

Core clock: 810 MHz (have overclocked mine to 1 GHz before)
Shader Clock : 1620 MHz
Effective Memory Clock: 1333 MHz

HD 5450 512 MB Specs:

Core Clock: 650 MHz
Effective Memory Clock: 800 Mhz

The 1GB version is slightly better than the 512 MB version with a Effective Memory Clock of 1600 MHz

I'd say get a GT520 because it is better than a 5450 and it's faster all round check this out: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/333598-33-radeon-5450-geforce

jxer4567
03-06-2012, 08:48 PM
I noticed that 5450 has GDDR3 compared to gt520 that has DDR3 wats the diference between the 2 also i have asked about 6450

dugimodo
03-06-2012, 09:19 PM
the 6450 is apparently better than a 520 according to this chart http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html so I'd go with that. Still not much of a gaming card but at that price it'll be about as good as anything

ChazTheGeek
03-06-2012, 09:31 PM
From the specs it don't look as good as the GT 520. There is no difference between GDDR3 and DDR3 the G just stands for graphics. So really it's the same unless you are talking about RAM.

Agent_24
03-06-2012, 09:49 PM
I'd go for the one with the bigger heatsink.

jxer4567
03-06-2012, 10:01 PM
ok thanks for this now i spose its 6450 vs GT 520 i need to know more also i knw these are not great choices for gaming they are directed at HTPC but i need to find out which one will be the best bang for my buck cause i only have a SFF pc right now also i dont really understand how that chart worked

Personally off that I would go for the 6450. But that's one graph.

Seeing as the 6450 is $80 I'd try and find a 9800 GT instead. I saw them new on firstin for $72 about 3 months ago (maybe).

Rhadeon 4550 is recomended for portal2 but that seems under powered.

jxer4567
03-06-2012, 11:10 PM
I can play portal at 15-20 fps it flatout ultimate carnage that plays at 7-15 fps thats the same for most car games nd fps action ndsimulators also no to the 9800 gt if you read i have a small form factor pc not a tower

icow
03-06-2012, 11:18 PM
Take the back bracket off *troll*

But seriously you can get low profile ones: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187061 (can't buy it from newegg obv. but its just an example).

jxer4567

i know you can take brackets off, i need to know should i get gt520 or 6450 fan on ,9800gt lp fan wil get to close to my ram

Slankydudl
03-06-2012, 11:41 PM
You have a small form factor pc? Get 6450 in my opinion.

icow
03-06-2012, 11:44 PM
I'm going to say 6450 fan then. Having a fanless gpu for gaming is asking for trouble. Kind of seems like a waste of money really. Personally I'd try to grab a 2nd hand 478 socket board of trademe cheep and a old tower case. Then buy a decent gpu.

jxer4567

I always get gpus with a fan this sff has sata ddr2 lga775 nd big hdds im savin up for a new rig but i need a cheap gpu for now until i get a new rig

Agent_24

Yeah but fand gpus are the same as fanless, but with a fan.

No, fanless cards have much bigger heatsinks. A normal card has a heatsink too small to run without a fan.

ChazTheGeek
04-06-2012, 10:46 AM
That's right- my heatsink is 4 cm high, you can get a GT 520 with a fan and it's smaller. It's better for overclocking too, but in your small form factor case that wouldn't be a good idea.

GT 520 is better than the 6450.

GT 520 Specs:

Core clock: 810 MHz
Shader Clock: 1620 MHz
Effective Memory Clock: 1333 MHz (can vary between cards e.g. a Zotac card is 1400 MHz)

HD 6450 Specs:

Core Clock: 625 MHz
Effective Memory clock: 1333 MHz (can vary between cards also)

They are roughly about the same price on trade me. The GT 520 is the better card usually.

Looking at that I'd skip all the recommendations so far and go for http://www.pp.co.nz/products.php?pp_id=AA26139
It's a bit more but basically twice as fast as the 520 and 6450 in all those tests. It looks low profile but it'd pay to check it comes with the bracket.

icow
04-06-2012, 12:28 PM
Agreed. and OP I'd go get the measurements on hsf before saying it's too big.

jxer4567

ChazTheGeek
04-06-2012, 01:06 PM
Not bad the GT 430, probably do, if it doesn't come with one you should find a bracket for it if you look around hard enough on the net.
When I upgrade my PC with new RAM and CPU , I'll be saving for a decent card maybe the GTX 560 Ti.

jxer4567
04-06-2012, 01:16 PM
gigabytes site must have the measurements of the GT 430 card wrong i have measured the inside of my pc, and the measurements for 165mm is fine but the 122mm is way to long to be realistic, but the 37 mm is fine has anyone got actual measurements cause the middle measurement 165mm x( 122mm )x 37mm seems to be wrong and unrealistic please thank you

ChazTheGeek
04-06-2012, 02:05 PM
Maybe you could pick up a free case from somewhere and move everything from your old one to the new one. Would pay to as small form factor cases are bad for cooling and upgrading, especially GPU's.

jxer4567
04-06-2012, 03:07 PM

dugimodo
04-06-2012, 03:58 PM
I think the 122mm is right, it will be the height and if you compare it to this http://www.pp.co.nz/products.php?pp_id=AA30413 it's actually lower - the asus 6450 is 138mm high and still low profile.
Don't spend too much on a graphics card, you can get MB/CPU/RAM combos starting at $200 and a case for under $100 easily enough.

http://www.pp.co.nz/products.php?pp_id=AA36862 & http://www.pp.co.nz/products.php?pp_id=AA14621 for example, you'd need an OS also of course.

I'm not suggesting you buy those, just pointing out it's not worth spending a great deal on an older machine like yours.
If you ever plan to upgrade the PC it's a good Idea if you stick to upgrades you transfer to a new machine, the graphics card obviously could be.

Ah you got one of those strange HP boards..I tried transferring a friends HP slimline motherboard with a LGA 775 Pentium 4 and the shape of the MB was awkward, so I couldn't put in the new case, I suppose I could have drilled new holes in the case.

jxer4567

icow
04-06-2012, 04:51 PM
I moved a old motherboard into a slim IBM case (dont even ask why) had different setup for the i/o ports so I just soldered a switch to some wires which i attached to the motherboard. Used that to startup the pc. Before that I just ran a screw driver along the pins on the motherboard till it booted.

Why cant you just use the psu from your computer in a new case? or just get adapters for a new one? Also is that black slot that is in view of the photo your pci-e slot? it looks very AGP to me. Even if the psu isn't atx it doesnt stop you from using it.

Yeah I almost feel bad for calling it gibberish, but the effort required to understand it is what prompted the comment.
It could use some more full stops and a bit of rewording, but it's not like texting with your thumbs so the thing that annoyed me the most was the abbreviated words.
A few spelling errors or typos etc I can live with as long as the meaning is clear.

I tend to read my own posts before submitting (sometimes more than once) in an effort to make sure they make sense.
