replaced harddrive in a hp pavilion dv6700

not sure how successful it is .. seemed all very straight forward..
tried to install win7 said no drivers available.
tried to install xp pro said no harddrive avail

installed ubuntu all went well .. i am quite happy to leave it
as OS but the battery is disappearing before my eyes 30 mins
as compared to 2.5 hours previouslyand i am
not technical enough to make the changes forums suggest.

tried again to install either windows now win7 saying cant read
i dunno UDH or UHD forgot which.. installed a package in ubuntu that
was supposed to help with reading these files, whatever, no joy.

tried to install xp again and still saying no harddrive.

have done the manufacturers check on harddrive all good apparently.

The reason XP wont install is it cant pick up the SATA drive, it needs sata drivers either slipsttreamed into the CD or third party drivers loaded from a floppy if the laptop has a floppy drive.

W7 should install fine, as it will have inbuilt drivers, other wise you can try and use Vista drivers. Try this - support-drivers.htm (http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html) click on Drivers and software, then in the search type in pavilion dv6700, then select the actual model you have. DV6700 is only the generic family.

To install W7, you more than likely will have to remove Ubuntu completely and blow away the partitions, try something like gparted (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/index.php) if you dont have any other partitioning software.

Sometimes you have to change the BIOS setting for sata, Compatible mode? IDE mode? Depends what it says.
