:help: :badpc: Hi guys, my best friend asked me for help. She has a external hard drive, and she can't see any data on it. I am running a virus scan as we speak, and boy, there is alot. You can see there is alot of data on it, as the virus programs displays the names of everything it scans, but if you open the disc, there's nothing there!
All her data is on the thing, including all her son's photo's. She really want's her data back.
The thing that buggs me, is in my computer, the drive's name (Backup) is in blue. There is only a view shortcut's in the drive, also blue writing, but the shortcuts don't work.
Please please please please can someone help us? Thank You all!

Would be nice if we could see the results of the scans and what programs you have scanned with.

You could go to http://www.piriform.com/products and download Recuva ... but suggest you wait till someone more knowledgeable than I replies to your request for help.

Run HighjackThis which you can get from http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ install and run then post the results back here, and someone will check them out.

Your drive is infected with a few trojans, all the data will be there still, but the infections are creating shortcuts that go to nowhere

What AV are you running to do the clean out ????

Just be careful as these Trojans can very easily infect any PC the drive is plugged into if the AV is not good enough. Often they create a auto run that infects the host PC the moment its plugged in. The original PC /Laptop the drive was plugged into needs to be scanned as well, as it could also be infected.

Download and run Trojan Remover (http://www.simplysup.com/) through the external drive, then you may have to use something like the recuva program sp8s linked to actually recover the data to your PC. You might be safe to run malwarebytes or superantispyware( link in my sig) as well through the drive.

Edited: better tell ya how to scan it eh :) Open My Computer ( or computer depending on the OS) right click the drive/scan with Trojan remover.

Sometimes these infections screw things badly on the external drives, all you can do is recover the data once the infections are removed, reformat the external drive then rescan all data again (as well as the PC you saved it to) and put the data back.

Is there a way to scan only that drive with HijacThis?
:thanks

Hi Wainuitech,
I am using AVG free. Yeah, I saw my pc going boinkers! I restarted, and all of a sudden, my background was gone, and I could not get it back. Lucky I fixed that.
I was into IT a view years back, but I never had a problem like that! I had a program called recover my files, but lost the codes. :crying
So now all the insects, worms and buggs are gone, so now I format? Where can I get a recovery program? :thanks

Theres a few of those infections that are about, they infect the drive and hide the files. Depending on the infection, sometimes simply removing it will allow access to all the files etc, other times it wont.

If after removing any infections, once again depending on which ones they were, using a program like Recuva ( as linked in Sp8's post) you install that, scan the external drive and recover the files to another PC, or external drive.

Once all data is safely recovered, and tested to open, the easiest way to "fix the drive" is reformat it, then you can put back the recovered data.

What ever you do make sure the recovered data works before formatting.

Another way to get the data off the drive is to sometimes use a live Linux CD, something like Ubuntu, that will often see the files as well.

AVG -- Hmmmmmmmmmm surprised it didn't get destroyed. If you wanted a free AV thats better, look at MSSE ( Microsoft Security Essentials) its got a far better detection rate and workings than AVG.

Just adding to above, The Recuva is Ok for a free program, being free means no outlay for a once off usage.

Personally I use a program called getdataback, thats located data on drives when most others have failed to even see the drive. Its paid software though, the trial will allow you to see any data but wont recover it till you pay for and enter the licence code.

Hi guys, I have got big problems! I was busy doing the whole “Recovering the data” bit, but I got viruses from the external hard drive... Now my pc is going mad. I can’t open any applications, I get errors the whole time. I even tried System Restore, but that does not even work.
Some of the errors I got was:
When trying to open MS Word – ‘Error – Application not found’
When opening apps on my desktop ‘Open With – Choose the program you want to use to open this file: ...’
When Opening a file called ADBCD2, I get: ‘ADBCD2.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.’
If I press ‘Don’t Send’ I get : ‘Runtime error 216 at 004041B2’
When trying to open anything in Control Panel, I get: ‘C:\WINDOWS\System\rundll32.exe – Application not found’

I also did a scan in Save Mode with AVG. It did a “Command line scan”.
I wrote down 3 Viruses that was found. They are:
jar_cache 26008491602009935.temp Virus found Win32/Cryptor (Object was removed)
HidExpTitanic.RWG Virus found Win32/Heur (Object was moved to Virus Vault)
Gemongemz.mp3 Corrupted exe table file (Object was moved to Virus Vault)

With that, I also got some:
“Not Tested – Locked File”
“Runtime packed fsg”
“The file is signed with a broken digital signature”

I did a scan with Hijackthis, and got the following results:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4
Scan saved at 06:50:20 PM, on 2012/02/14
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702)
Boot mode: Safe mode
