In small amounts, pretty damn small amounts.

In fact, for the amount I want (1/4" or 6mm and 5/8" or 15mm diameters in about 70mm long or less) you could probably just as well say 'offcuts'

so, what kind of place is likely to give away offcuts of brass rods? :p

Or sells short lengths (or even not so short!) for a good price...

In Nelson I regularly buy 1 metre lengths of brass rod in sizes from 1/8" to 1/2". I turn a variety of door, drawer and box knobs from this stuff. Mico Plumbing Supplies. Used to be known as Mico-Wakefield. Probably got branches elsewhere....

Ha, I think I'm the only one who actually has a cistern that old...

I found them online but couldn't find prices, what are they like?

Find an engineering company that does CNC turning work ... they start off with long lengths and have to discard the last 50 - 100mm depending on what they're making. Use the yellow pages and let your fingers do the walking !

Go to Methvens tap makers 447 Rosebank road, ask at reception to see Phil or Johan in engineering, they are nice guys and ask them if you can grab a few pieces from the scrap bin.
