unable to load your first link; and the 2nd link, is this (in_4a.zip) you're referring to? I tried but doesn't work and says that I require Quicktime 6.4. I downloaded Quicktime 7 (latest) installed but no joy.

Renamed the file to in_m4a.dll works.

What version of Winamp are you using?

My version has no problem playing M4A files.

Have tried both 5.622 and 5623 which I downloaded yesterday. Copied the in_m4a.dll to the plug-in folder then only it plays m4a songs, at the expense of my Asian (Chinese) song titles! Now Winamp shows all the Chinese song titles as %^%&^&##.

Any other good free media player to recommend?

Hmm.. turns out mine can play AAC-based M4A but not ALAC.

Try VLC? It can do just about anything.

Googled and found that installing Winamp Essentials will put it right but when I installed it, Winamp totally could not be launched - had to uninstall and reinstalled winamp.

Anyway, I copied this file (alac.w5s from Winamp Essentials plugin) to winamp's system folder and everything works OK. :)

Just to share with those who are interested. :)
