Is it possible to remove a file extension (.cfg)) that opens with notepad in Windows 7 64-Bit?

Click on the "Start" orb at bottom left
Type "file ass" in the search box
You should see three options at the top of the list that appears
Select "Make a file type always open in a specific application"

Otherwise select "Change the file type associated with a file extension"
and you will see the whole list of extensions and associations.

If that doesn't answer your question please come back with more detail and what you want to change.
You shouldn't 'remove' or change .cfg file extensions. I was assuming you don't want them to open with Notepad, but what alternative should Win 7 do when you click on that type of file?

If you inadvertantly leave the tick in the box & now a bunch of files are showing the notepad icon, how can you go back to the prompt box asking you what program you want to want to open it with?
