Go HERE and see (http://support.seagate.com/customer/en-us/warranty_validation.jsp?form=0) Fill in the details as requested and it will tell you if the drive is still in warranty.

You have to enter in the drives Serial number & Model number OR Part number.

Seagate advises it was sold as a system component and that it is an OEM drive.

Does that mean it has no warranty ? I believe it is either one or two years old since
purchase.

If you go to Seagates warranty checker, enter the serial number and model number it tells you how long the warranty was and whether it is or not still covered.

Sold standalone they did have 3 years. Sold as part of Compaq or other "brand PCs" they only had 1 year.

Ah, but Merry Xmas, had already filled out their form, but they came back with " Its an OEM product", not very helpful !

If its the OEM version, then yep they only have 1 year warranties or what ever the PC manufacture puts on them.

While the following is from Western Digital difference-between-wd-oem-vs.-retail-(rtl)-drives (http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1352/~/difference-between-wd-oem-vs.-retail-(rtl)-drives) the same applies to Seagate. This here (http://www.ehow.com/about_6577015_oem-hard-drive_.html) explains it as well.
