Looking at getting external hard drive to hold back up files on, are there brands to avoid or are they generally all the same? I would only use the HD to store, as a back up to a back.

I had one of those I think (stood upright) that failed on me as well as well but ripped it out of the case and put it in a cheap case from pbtech and still going strong.

Because of the above, +1 for WD

Go with whatever brand you like.

All drives will fail eventually, if you're worried about losing your backup, make 2 backups.

Generally the casing isn't an issue. What drive is in it matters more.
WD and Seagate were the most reliable, although, yes, drives die...which is why we back up on more than one - chances of both having a problem at the same time are not very likely.

The Power pack on 3.5" drives die often too...but again, have more than one drive with your stuff on it, and never leave the external permanently plugged in.

Cheers, this will be a second backup and the HD will only be used when a back up is made. Nothing more.
I been using a WD one as my main back up, but finding every now and then the pc doesnt recognize it. Could be the usb lead, but did make me worry some what. I have a back up on pc and ext hd. The one I use now I also use to work when Im away from home.
