View Full Version : TIP: Swapfiles & Ram

Now this tip is not new, but as there are current postings about ram and swapfiles, it's worth repeating.

Windows98 in particular doesnt seem to know when you have a lot of ram, and it still goes merrily on making big swapfiles, leaving ram unused.
So to force it to use ram first, put this line into your system.ini file under the [386Enh] heading using Notepad or a text editor:

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

Cheers.

Oh, and I forgot, there is a really dinky little utility that sits in your system tray and tells you how big the swapfile is and how much ram is being used. The zipped file is only 27k. You can get it from:

http://sac-ftp.externet.hu/utilmisc23.html

as swpfile1.zip

even better dowload cacheman(ver5 is the latest i think).

note useing conservative swapfile can cause glitching in games.

Very interesting.

Regarding 'Windows98 in particular doesnt seem to know when you have a lot of ram', what is considered a lot of ram these days?
