Now I have a job I am going to start looking at getting my freenas box built, would people recommend a hardware or ZFS software raid?

There's been songs sung about Reenas Box.

Oops sorry, Spelling Mistakes. You said Freenas Box.

I'd better stop now before I get banned. ;)

Rule of thumb is a hardware raid will always be better than a software raid, its just common sense really ones physical and the others virtual.

I always thought that too but I have been hearing that ZFS is really great for a software raid on Freenas/Linux

Bingo.

Depending on your use, you may be better with version 7 over 8 too, 8 seems to have lost a lot of functionality IE itunes server/torrent box.

Hmm dont think I will be missing a torrent box seeing as we cant use them any more

i guess you also have to think about what the raid is being used for eg data redundancy or speed if its speed then you have to have a hardware setup otherwise you will be confined to the speed of your single partitioned drive thus defeating the purpose of a raid array

I just want redundancy, If I wanted speed I would go Raid 1 Mirroring with sata3 hard drives

then either way wont really matter what ever is easiest or on hand will do the job software is usually easier to setup than hardware

Software raid isnt as fast, but (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) with Software raid you can take one of the disks and whack it into another machine running freenas for example and have it happily rebuild the raid if everything except a single disk in your server is taken out...
