View Full Version : Computer Randomly Shutdown

Last week my computer shutdown then refused to boot. Solved by unplugging HDD starting up, shuting down restarting with HDD plugged in. Booted into safe mode and scanned for malware. Removed smad.exe. My computer recently did the same thing so it might not have been the problem. Is there a log or anything that I can look at to try and work out the problem?

Look in event viewer. If you can get into windows

Ok i got these errors:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
KS0108
LC7981
n3900
prodrv06
prohlp02
prosync1
SED133x
sfhlp01
T6963C

and this next one came up multiple times:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR2.

Is starforce installed (this for copy protection for games I think). I think prodrv06, prohlp02, prosync1 belong to starforce. sfhlp01 may also belong to starforce. Some sites say this is similar to a rootkit

Starforce was installed at one point, but the game didnt work so i uninstalled the game and presumably starforce as well. However I read online that some people have to manually remove entries after unistalling, would you know how i should go about this?

Get tdsskiller and see if it finds the files / services for starforce. I dont think its that easy removing starforce (just uninstalling the game). Or get the file from here (http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/protect.phtml?c=55)

Computer just turned off randomly when I tried to run the exe. On restart the exe ran fine and found no drivers.

Just shut down again, running in safe mode now.

Sounds like its overheating or something then.. If it shuts down completely. Open the case and see if its full of dust or something. If its a desktop. If its crashing / rebooting. Something like a driver / file maybe causing it

Just looked in event viewer again. A sh*t load of errors at the top of the list. Is there an easy way that I can get them onto pf1?

There maybe too many to post all of them in here. Look in Google, to see what some of the errors mean. Altho I dont think that'll show you the cause (if its shutting down completely)

wainuitech
10-09-2011, 07:21 PM
Is that all there is ?????? ( kidding)

One of the problems looks like it may be is your browser
"The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start"

Try resetting the default browser back to IE. Also go into msconfig and make sure every thing thats not needed is unticked to run on startup.

Assuming this is W7 click start, type in reli, open View reliability History -- look to see what the errors are - they may give better info than eventvwr

icow
10-09-2011, 07:26 PM
Ok will do that once I finish backing up all my stuff. Yes this is Win7. (64bit).

Speedy Gonzales
10-09-2011, 07:36 PM
Put teamviewer on it, and I'll have a look. And see whats in startup etc

icow
10-09-2011, 08:40 PM
@ Wanui: Did all of that and still the same problem.
@ Speedy: By the time i got teamviewer downloaded and installed it had turned itself off (again).
Is there a way that I can just reinstall windows over the top of itself, It appears to me that the OS is screwed up. Also the computer seems stable running other anything but windows. I might put the install dvd in and leave it running on the main menu for about 1hr and see if it shuts itself down again.

Speedy Gonzales
10-09-2011, 08:52 PM
Well I wouldnt try and reinstall windows over itself then. Or you may never get into windows again. Did you see if it was overheating if this is a desktop. Its shutting off for a reason

icow
10-09-2011, 08:54 PM
Yeah its a desktop. brand new case so has no dust. I put my hand on the heatsink and it was "warm" at best.

Speedy Gonzales
10-09-2011, 08:56 PM
Could be a bung PSU. Try another if you have one. Did you build it?? If you did did you plug all the plugs in?? (ie: The ATX 12v )?

icow
10-09-2011, 09:07 PM
Yeah I built it myself. All the connections are plugged in. I traced some of the drivers that where causing the errors back to turecrypt and lcd studio. I have uninstalled both programs.

EDIT: Upon closer looking I found that one of the PCI-E cables going to my gfx card was half plugged in. Windows seems to load faster now. I still get a small amount of lag in explorer just after startup. But overwise appears to be working better.

Speedy Gonzales
10-09-2011, 09:22 PM
Thats what the other files in post 3 belong to LCD Studio. The computer browser error maybe related to Wanarpv6. It has nothing to do with IE or any browser. It'll probably boot into safe mode but not normally

wainuitech
11-09-2011, 12:10 PM
The reason I mentioned the browser is not because of Wanarpv6 it was one of the other files that was listed, several people on different forums reset the browser and the problem went away. Either way something is causing a problem on startup - hence the error message.

Having the power plug not in correctly wouldn't be helping.

There are also MANY instances of the TCP/IP stack be corrupted and causing slow start ups along with many other reasons.

If its still doing it, simply running sfc /scannow may have some effect.

icow
11-09-2011, 04:27 PM
Shut itself down again. I thought I had the problem fixed. At least there is only 1 error this time:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
prodrv06
prohlp02
prosync1
sfhlp01

I looked in system32/Drivers? and none of these files are there. Is it possible that something on my computer is trying to find starforce stuff but starforce is no longer there? i.e. I uninstalled something which also removed the starforce drivers.

EDIT: All of these files can be found in the SysWOW64 folder.

icow

There are also some errors about a network card and mse. There are also errors that talk about a shutdown being unexpected (no ****).
Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x0619E083276A. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

wainuitech
11-09-2011, 04:58 PM
The errors regarding the network card could be related to the previous post I made
There are also MANY instances of the TCP/IP stack be corrupted and causing slow start ups along with many other reasons.
To repair / rebuild that if you want Click HERE from MS (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357) this will remove any current settings (Static IP etc) and rebuild it back to default. A faulty TCP/IP stack WILL cause start up problems, and possible shutdowns.

Edited:All those errors in #23 are related to StarForce -- Seems the entries are still there, they will more than likely be in the registry.

Try running Ccleaner, on the left, Tools - Startup tab - see if you can locate the entries, if they are there disable them. If they are not there, then you can try this --- MAKE A RESTORE POINT -- run ccleaner / Registry- Scan for issues - remove anything it finds.

The restore point is in case it all turns to custard - you can put back the removed reg keys. Make sure you have either the W7 Install DVD, or a repair CD to run restore if required.

icow
11-09-2011, 05:24 PM
Did what the link said, ran CCleaner. Cleaned out all the crap in the reg. Will wait and see.

Speedy Gonzales
11-09-2011, 05:24 PM
This error I think, are the the ATI drivers, The server {DC0C2640-1415-4644-875C-6F4D769839BA} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

I wouldnt worry about this one. Did you run the starforce removal tool?

icow
11-09-2011, 05:25 PM
Yeah it detected nothing even though i can locate the files manually. The star-force website is down as well.

icow
11-09-2011, 08:34 PM
Still doing it. =(

icow
11-09-2011, 09:59 PM
Fixed hopefully. Got another sfcleaner and it got rid of the drivers.

EDIT: Spoke to soon.

The problem with this random crashing is
Is it hardware - eg overheating
Or is it some software clash ?

To my non technical mind if its over heating it is not gong to show up in an error log as the BIOS is designed to shut off when the temp reaches a certain level, - then BANG it just turns off.

I have been having this type of problem for the last few months.
It had been crashing once or twice a day at random
I though I had fixed it when I put my motherboard into another case with three fans.
Then it went for 3 weeks on 24/7 with no problem.
Until Saturday ! when it crashed twice.

I can't handle it anymore, so I am, going to buy a new motherboard and cpu and put this new system in another case.
I will also re-install Windows so will start with a clean slate.
(But of course I won't have found out what caused it)

dugimodo

These things can be so hard to find, my flatmates PC has randomly restarted ever since it was built and refused all attempts to fix it. It's almost 2 years old now.
Have replaced or temporarily swapped:
Motherboard
PSU
Graphics card
Heatsink on the CPU (now running a larger one from a higher specced AMD CPU)
Reinstalled windows a few times

The motherboard made it better but didn't fix it, as did the graphics card. He runs it with the side off and a desktop fan blowing into which seems to make it fairly stable so it's definately heat related. If it was mine I'd keep going until it was fixed but he doesn't have the money or the motivation. I've decided either his CPU or RAM is faulty given that's all that has never been replaced.

Another friend of mine has upgraded his PC on the sly for years in the same old beige metal case so his wife won't notice, it has horrendous airflow and the PSU sits on top of the CPU cooler almost touching it and restricting half the fans airflow, it sits on the carpet sucking up dust, is never cleaned, and through 3 upgrades has been one of the most stable pc's I've seen.

Life is random.

Disabled the colour LCD slide show in device manager. After removing the starforce drivers the computer has only shut down by itself once or twice. Now I'm getting this more often:
Screen goes black fans go on full speed. Today windows informed me that it was in fact a BSOD.

It shows the cause up the top. The first 2 belong to DirectX. Try updating DirectX (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=8109). And the 3rd are the Nvidia drivers

Did you uninstall the Nvidia drivers, then use something like Driver sweeper to remove them. Then reinstall the latest drivers?

icow
14-09-2011, 08:08 PM
I just used the standard old windows uninstall driver. Then I installed new drivers (used the automatic search function) so I assume I have the latest ones.

14-09-2011, 08:11 PM
Auto search function from what? Windows update? I wouldnt use windows update drivers

icow
14-09-2011, 08:14 PM

Speedy Gonzales
14-09-2011, 08:23 PM
Looks like that error comes from a logitech G13/G15 keyboard (http://forums.logitech.com/t5/G-Series-Gaming-Keyboards/WUDFRd-Error-Solution/td-p/620636).

It looks like 2 devices arent compatible with Windows 7 (http://forums.logitech.com/t5/G-Series-Gaming-Keyboards/G15-and-Windows-7-Event-log-issue/td-p/363578). Looks like disabling the logitech gamepanel devices mono & qvga in the device manager fixes it

dugimodo
16-09-2011, 07:51 AM
Get some temperature monitoring software perhaps and see what temps you are getting. Speedfan and realtemp are good ones.
Sudden shutdown is a feature of many motherboards when the CPU hits unsafe temperatures to prevent damage, but it has the potential to corrupt data and cause other issues as well.

Digby
16-09-2011, 09:12 AM
And I have read that if a CPU gets too hot too often it can damage it which will mean you will get more shutdowns.

Computer in my sig the one with the 460GTX. HDD is a seagate barracuda 7200rpm drive. Motherboard is a Asus M4N68T (the one that doesn't support the x6 phenoms). I just rewired everything inside to check that I wasnt a loose wire. Running a prime95 now. Get a message from windows saying that the gpu driver kernel failed or something (test has been running for 2mins and have got the message twice). Does prime95 even do anything to the gpu? main purpose of running the test was to check if it was the cpu...

Update the hdd fw if you want. (http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=213891) Its up to CC49 (Its the same firmware I used for this, but its not the same hdd). Download the file. Disable firewalls and AV programs. I would also kill UAC. Then wait for it to update the firmware, and wait for it to reboot. Thats if your hdd is the ST3250318AS

Sounds like these M4N68T mobos do have probs with ram (http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?board_id=1&model=M4N68T+V2&id=20110315022406648&page=1&SLanguage=en-us). Have you tested the ram with something like memtest?

I'm starting to think its the graphics card. It keeps black screening for about five seconds. Then comes back with a message that says the drivers crashed and recovered.

One way to find out uninstall the drivers use driver sweeper. Remove the card, use another card

I don't have another pci-e graphics card on hand. So I might have to go to the integrated one thats on the mobo.
