Can someone please help me figure out why my pc is running slow and seems to have all its RAM used?
I only use the computer for basic applications but there are a bunch of programs using RAM and I have no idea what the are, even when I don't have any programs running except AVAST. I took a screen shots of the task manager performance and applications but cannot figure out how to post them. I would greatly appreciate your help.
Kristina

Get hijackthis (http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/). Install then run it. Then click on scan the system and save a log. Copy and paste (what it puts in notepad) in here. And we can see whats in it. Get 2.04

Sounds like it could be a virus, or just running a huge pile of junk.

Yes Spigot is something I removed from a computer too, it appears to be some kind of crapware

Thank you everyone. I was able to do what you suggested except uninstall the following:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"

I re-ran hijak this and included the log below. The computer seems to load windows much faster but opening programs is still lagging (i.e., word and IE)
One other question: Can anyone suggest what I should have the initial and max sizes for paging files for my virtual memory? I have 512MB RAM (gasp I know it's an old computer) and initial is set at 768 and max at 1536. Thank you again

Increasing virtual memory won't really help. Virtual memory is on the hard drive which is a lot slower than physical RAM.

If you're using all the physical RAM and the HDD is going flat out it's going to be slow. You have to decrease the RAM usage.

Another problem that causes lag is if the HDD is running in PIO mode. Details here: http://winhlp.com/node/10 Follow the steps in the first part (Quick solution) and see if that helps.

Use ccleaner install it, Then run it. (http://www.ccleaner.com)(click on advanced during the install). Untick any extra programs it wants to install first.

Then go to tools / startup. Highlight O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe" then click on delete.

For sure, but I'm confused now as I thought you suggested above that I uninstall ccleaner? Eg. Uninstall this, its classed as adware
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ccleaner] "C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner.exe" /AUTO

Am I missing something?

No I forgot ccleaner is already installed. If it is run it. Then go to tools/startup. Highlight the java entry click on delete. It'll delete the entry it wont uninstall java

Spigot is classed as adware (whats in bold) not ccleaner
