Hey

Just thought I'd put it out there and ask where people are going to watch the fireworks for the RWC on Friday.
I'm not too keen on the Rugby part of it but the fireworks is supposed to be 'the biggest ever to be staged in this country..'
I've got a couple of thoughts for where I'll go.
1. Mount Wellington - As its got a good view of the sky tower and harbor bridge.
2. Stanley Point, Devonport - Although I'm sure that's a popular point and it'll be hard to get a park it avoids going into town (I live up north)
3. Local (Whangaparaoa) - Basically if I'm lazy about it, or my telephoto lens can reach far enough (going to be taking photos of it obviously)

So yeah can anyone think of a better place or where they're going to view the fireworks?

Wow congrats, looks awesome wouldn't mind that myself but I'd rather not be in the crowds so I'm staying away, well that and I want to get some photos of the fireworks so the viaduct wouldn't be the best place.

I'll probably stay in town, at least until the Finn boys have finished their free concert, but under the harbour bridge near the old toll plaza would give a good view, as would the footbridge over the motorway at the bottom of Exmouth Road. Mt Victoria or North Head will be popular spots as will Devonport itself.

For me it will be on TV. At 8.30 in the morning.

Yeah Devonport is looking like the number one now.
Calliope Road and Stanley point Rd being the main ones I'll try to get a park at, otherwise Mt Victoria.

Quite looking forward to this, hopefully it lives up to what they're saying about it, I heard they spent a few million on it so it better :)

CYaBro I hear its somewhere around 8pm, I've heard as early as 7:55pm (maybe 7:45) and as late as 8:15pm, but you'll be in the midst of it so I'm sure they'll give you some form of warning.

From my deck up in the Waitakeres as long as the weather is OK - and no, I'm not giving out my address. :)

Does anyone know if the opening ceremony on TV1 will be in HD? I know TV3 are advertising all their RWC content as being in HD but I can't find out if TV1 are or not.

I left work too late. It just took me 20 minutes to fight my way to the ferry building- a distance of no more than 100 metres, just outside the ferry building. I've never seen so many people in the CBD. And the Viaduct was insane: people queuing up to get into every bar. I had to go the back way to get through!

We are getting more ads here than opening ceremony coverage. The lighting effects are rather impressive. The sound we are getting here isn't great, We don't seem to be getting a direct sound feed.

I think someone has just flicked the switch, we are now getting a direct sound feed.

Youre probably getting it quicker than us...

Well, I just got back 30 mins ago from Eden Park. The sight of Britomart was disgusting. You'd think people would have SOME standards. I guess once they go on the piss all hope is lost.

Also, if you were in EP, west stand, and saw a fat chinese guy with a radio and a folder looking disgruntled, it's probably me.

watching from Bastion point was mint. Drove down and got there about 7.45. Found a park no problem, about 15 mins walk from the point. Walked up stairs, watched all the fireworks and had a really great view. Finished, walked back and drove home no worries. Best idea I had all week :)

The sight from my deck in Waiatarua was pretty good too, although a bit distant, obviously. We had a perfect demonstration of the speed of sound - the booms from the explosions could be heard for what seemed like ages after the light show had finished.

According to what I recorded it was 1920x1080...and 3.17 GB lol. Thats a lot for less than 40 mins (if its not HD)
