For a little while now I have been planning on setting up an IRC channel for PressF1.
I finally got around to setting it up properly after I received permission from Zara.
Here are the details for the room.
If you have an irc client the server is irc.epicirc.com port 6667 Channel is #PressF1
irc://irc.epicirc.com:6667/PressF1
If you do not have an irc client the server admin has installed a web based client, the link to join is:
http://webchat.epicirc.com:9070/?nick=Pressf1user...&channels=PressF1&prompt=1

This link will open the client and also give you a random nickname that you can change.

Common IRC Commands: (Do not enter the brackets)
To change your nickname type /nick (new nick)
To register your nickname once you have changed from the generated nick type /msg nickserv register (password) (email), you will then receive an automatic email from the server with a line of code to type in to confirm the registration of your nickname.
When you join and change to your nickname every time you need to confirm you own it by typing /msg nickserv identify (password)
To join another room type /join (#channel) Note: the # must be included in channel names.

Those are the commands that you will need for now, if you have any questions you can ask them in channel and if I am around I will try to answer them or someone else may be able to help or you can join #help.

Disclaimer: The PressF1 IRC channel is not affiliated to PC World NZ in any way, The PressF1 name is being used with permission.

excuse my ignorance but what is the point of this, another chat type forum thing????/what is an IRC channel?

Its where a lot of people can chat in the one place, at the same time (instead of something like this). You have to reply to what someone has said. In IRC. whoever is in the same channel will see what whoever types (in real time).

There is also private messaging too

Speedy Gonzales

You can also send files (it may not be that fast tho) in IRC. To others

Years ago, some IRC servers were used for files. It was massive. Until most of the servers were hit with DDOS attacks. And some / most of them were hit so hard, it took ages for them to recover

Yeah most servers have dcc disabled now, which is why HFS is so awesome.

Not to mention it's a nice safe-haven when PF1 goes down ;)

The server I'm on, it isnt. It maybe disabled in the program you use, it doesnt mean the server has disabled it. And I doubt most servers would disable it completely (unless its got files on it). Otherwise, there would be no point in the program, having a dcc option in it

nedkelly

Hmm cant remember if it is disabled on this server or not.
Might ask later when the NetAdmin comes back on.
Or I could just txt him hahaha

Cheers for setting this up :).

Out of interest, why epicirc rather than registering a channel on Freenode (http://freenode.net/)? Most IRC-using geeks tend to be connected to Freenode already, whereas epicirc is yet another service name to remember.

Erayd: I use epic the most because it is my mates network that he runs. And also because I have a little power there.
And I know exactly who runs it.

It's like an open Instant messenger service. I used it a lot when building my first 3D printer to get advice from the Reprap community as there are always people on there all over the world

Just bumping this back up to the top of the thread list so people start using the channel

What makes you think people are going to use the channel?

nedkelly
12-09-2011, 08:40 AM
Well I had hoped that the channel would fill up with people that wanted live chat

But apparently it is not going to!

True. But there again we already had/have PressF1 chat did we not?

Chilling_Silence
12-09-2011, 01:41 PM
Yes, we did, but it's not been up for a wee while now. It used to get quite a bit of traffic, so this is a nice replacement.

gary67

Is there a way to save the IRC address but not as opening at startup? Sort of like bookmarked. I'm using Chatzilla and have another IRC channel that loads at startup

Didn't realise could just right click in FF and save link as bookmark

Yes, we did, but it's not been up for a wee while now. It used to get quite a bit of traffic, so this is a nice replacement.
I pulled ChatF1 offline because it was only getting about one visit every couple of months, generally by people who would log in / out without saying anything - I figured this was a pretty obvious sign that it was time for it to die a natural death.

I can put it back online if people want it (it used to be reasonably popular a few years ago), but it's been a long time since it saw any useful level of traffic.

My personal opinion is that a chat facility integrated into the main PF1 site has the best chance of being used - anything else has a high enough inconvenience level that I just can't see people bothering, especially now that social networking sites are so ubiquitous.

So is this you guys telling me to close the channel down?Heck no - just being realistic that it's unlikely to be popular; however that's no reason not to have one :).

Different group of members here now. It was a PF1 virtual reality with bartenders serving up drinks, parties going on and even the occasional dancing on the table tops (won't mention names ...:xmouth:). When the forum went down (which was frequent in those days) the ChatF1 filled up.

It may just take a while for your IRC channel to gain momentum. Don't forgot many users here have not used IRC so this would be an initial barrier.

Yeah that is true.
Any chance i can get this stickied so I dont have to keep bumping it?
And if activity does not pick up by november you can delete the thread.

An old feature from ChatF1 has just been added to the channel.
In chatF1 if you typed /bargnome (drink) bargnome would serve you a drink.
This has been added to #pressf1 now, the command is a tiny bit different though.
It is now !bargnome (Drink)

nedkelly

Yeah over time I think people will start to use it more, but in the beginning it will take some time for people to use it.
Well there are a few people that use it now, but would love to see it more active.

nedkelly

Ok so it has been a few months now and the channel has not picked up, so would people use it more if it was on a bigger irc network like Freenode?

Ok so it has been a few months now and the channel has not picked up, so would people use it more if it was on a bigger irc network like Freenode?Yes if it was on Freenode, but would still need others to be interested - a dead channel is one I'm unlikely to check often.

nedkelly
03-01-2012, 09:19 AM
Ok I will leave it a week and see what other ircers say about it.

Chilling_Silence
04-01-2012, 08:46 AM
Unfortunately I don't get the chance to stop by IRC as often as I'd like. Because I'm never in one spot for long, having things like Jabber works well for me, personally, but it's not so good at the whole open 'group-chat' thing.

On the other hand, when I *do* get the chance to sign in to IRC, it's pretty much purely to freenode.

nedkelly
04-01-2012, 09:45 AM
Ok then, I will move the channel to freenode at some point this week.
When I am done would you be able to edit the original post chill with the new details?

Chilling_Silence
04-01-2012, 11:11 AM
Yeah sure thing :)

nedkelly
07-01-2012, 10:03 AM
Ok everyone the irc channel has now moved to Freenode so hopefully more of you use it.
The channel is ##pressf1 on irc.freenode.net
If you dont have an irc client you can use the following link to Freenode's webclient.
http://webchat.freenode.net/?nick=PF1user...&channels=%23%23pressf1&prompt=1&uio=Mj10cnVldd
Hope to see more of you online soon
