WD Elements 2TB Desktop Hard Drive - $139
WD My Book Essential 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive - $199

Well, the obvious answer is 60 bucks, but what does the extra get you? I bought a 1TB Elements a while back for my Toshiba laptop, and need more space. Will the "Essential" give me a significantly faster transfer rate given that I've only got USB 2. Any other advantages?

Thanks

The backup software on them is really probably all that is

The bottom one should work, but not at USB3 speed. Since you dont have USB3. You would have to have USB3 onboard for it to run @ USB3 speed

Is that a selling point anymore? I'm on Vista, but have got separate backup software, and I thought the integrated Win 7 backup option was supposed to be alright.

It certainly is just a lot of those ext drives come with backup software pre installed sort of like for those who are likely to get a Darwin award

Theres slightly more than software. If you go to http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=480 Thats one, in the middle of the page near the bottom is a link to the other - compare and you will see the difference. (specifications link as well in both)
