Vodafone New Zealand has signed a long term capacity deal with Pacific Fibre, over its plan to build a multi-million dollar international submarine cable.

The undersea cable system will connect Australia to New Zealand, then to the USA.

It's scheduled to be launched by early 2014.

Under the 10-year deal, Vodafone will become Pacific Fibres biggest New Zealand customer.

Pacific Fibre's co-founder Sir Stephen Tindall is welcoming Vodafone on board with the project.

He's also talking up the merits of the cable, which will link New Zealand with Australia and the US.

"It effectively parks New Zealand, in my opinion, just off the Californian coast, it gives small operators who want to get started the ability to get in on super-fast broadband connectivity with the United States," he says.

Pacific Fibre chief executive Mark Rushworth says partnering with a multi-national like Vodafone will encourage investors to get on board.

"We've been talking to investors in New Zealand, we've seen strong support out of New Zealand which is good to validate once again, but also out of Australia and in particular up in Asia," he says.

The cable's scheduled to be launched in 2014 and they're now looking for investors to fund the cable's construction.

The cable was announced quite some time back, but it's good to see they're getting some of the financial backing that they need to make it a reality!
