I have an SD card that, despite all attempts, will not format and therefore cannot be used. Is there a way, other than the usual way, that I can format the card and make it useful once more?

Its not an SDHC card is it?? And the card reader doesn't support SDHC?

Can it be formatted by the device its going to be used in, ie camera, mp3 player, phone?

is the micro card missing? - if it has one :)

otherwise try a different card reader, or try to format it in the device that is going to be using it, as mentioned above

What brand? I picked up a 4GB Apacer from a "bargain" bin at a well known computer chain and wasn't able to format it.

It is an SDHC and the card reader, the camera, does support SDHC as it already has an SDHC card which functions well. When I put the SDHC non formatted card in the camera it says, "Memory card error." I can go to format in the camera but it will not format the card.

I do not know if the micro card is missing as I don't know what that is.

The brand is DSE 4GB SDHC class 6.

I suppose it does not really matter if I can't format the card - they're cheap enough - but I was wondering why it does not work and what can be done, if anything, to make it work.

Go for a Class 10 Apacer

If it's new DSE are fairly good about returns, if not maybe scandisk can shed some light?

Sounds like its faulty. Take it back to DSE if you can - get a refund and buy a better quality card.

I use Transcend cards and havent had an issue. They're not the quickest though.
Sandisk are expensive, but (apparently) worth it.

Only problem with Scandisc is that the card needs to be formatted. So it sounds as though I will be taking it back. Thanks for your help.

Do you have the write-protect switch on? Perhaps a dirty contact?

If not then it's probably broken.

This may not be the "techies choice" ... but I've always found a 4lb hammer quite effective in formatting non compliant SD cards into any format you wish ... a little like origami with attitude ... :D

Dick-Smith are pretty good with refunds but after that I think even they would refuse.

I had thought about that - unusual for me - but it is definitely unlocked. Never thought of a dirty contact so I tried some meths but still no joy. Looks as though it is going back. Thanks people.:thanks
