Hey guys

I'm doing a little research and wondered if you guys would be keen to help out? I'm looking at different speed tests per town/ISP in New Zealand after being at the Crown Fibre talk in Auckland yesterday.

You can join my speedwave at http://www.speedtest.net/wave/085acb5bbfe200ec?

Would really apreciate any assistance. If you don't have an account and you do it, would you mind posting on here the ID speedtest gives you so I can put your name down as helping. :)

Cheers guys!

speeds at uni are too rubbish to try a speedtest

Keep in mind that a lot of people are still being cabinetized, but then again it's not difficult to tell who has been based on national speed tests, as nationally people are less likely to be over-subscribed or throttled back so much.

Winner with 6 badges so far!! :D

Oh you are just showing off CS.

How do you have a 0 ping?

I call either hack or cheating by being at an ISP

Oh thats right I forgot you went with them.
How is the service?
Have you had any issues?

Put a couple of Tests up and I am inland from Tauranga (Slingshit)

With Speedtest it wants to use Palmerston North as the preferred server which I am no where near, noticed this occurring the last month, usually worldxchange Auckland

Even though I change to Auckland ,the result shows Palmeston North

OH yes the speed of late has been worse than crap

Could anyone shed some light on it?

are you manually selecting the server or clicking the recommended button?

10-08-2011, 02:57 PM
@nedkelly, They've been great! Awesome price, lots of bandwidth. We've gone for a 100m/bit fibre connection, with 10M CIR international and PIR 100M national. Couldn't believe the price vs what we *were* paying :D

@Lawrence, Slingshot are relatively oversubscribed, and don't seem to be in the mood to purchase additional bandwidth.

hmm there was talk on Geekzone about them not being that good.
Maybe when I get fibre laid up here might look at going with them.
Should help with linux ISOs as long as the copyright law does not say they are illegal activities on p2p.

Thanks so much guys. Much appreciated. This is running through until December so if you can recommend or even try again later on the track that would be wicked.

Dam @Chill! So jealous!!!!!

@nedkelly, Yeah their ADSL launch back in the day didn't go according to plan from what I can gather, but I can certainly vouch for their Fibre, it's awesome :D

@Lawrence, who is getting slower ? WxC or HD?

10-08-2011, 07:24 PM
Oh it was their adsl?
Well maybe I will look at them for me when I can.
I doubt Xnet is getting slower, I am with them and just got a speed boost given to me recently, easily pull 1MBps from some sites, depending on the time.

@Lawrence, who is getting slower ? WxC or HD?[/QUOTE]

The main slow down occurred when I was upgraded to Navigator (phone line/internet) plan due to the old one being deleted

11-08-2011, 09:31 AM
Yeah they had a rough start, which is a shame, they basically got hammered. Since discontinuing their flat-rate plan, things have been great at their end. Basically, going to a bunch of nerds and geeks and saying "Hi, here's a flat-rate plan at a great price" is just asking to have them r@p3 and pillage your bandwidth :p
Still, with them, I have no complaints. Service has been great, both customer service and the throughput (We've got DSL from them also for one of our work sites, get 16mbps every time)!

I think Xnet have adjusted the way that they share out their bandwidth to their customers, somebody mentioned all the DSL / Naked DSL were lumped together in a single pool now, which includes all those who were previously using off-peak data on the 'torrent' plan. I could be mistaken though.

Wonder if I can convince the security team to let me run this test at work... gigabit fibre inside a telecom datacentre :P

I am almost embarressed to share the poor results I am getting :(

11-08-2011, 05:26 PM
@inphinity give it a go. Would love to see those results. :D

@southern_jas Any results is good. See mine at the bottom? You can't do worse than that.
