Hi, I have just been sent a DVD from a mate in the States but can't play it as its Region 1. Can anyone reccommend a free downloadable, easy to use, full version application I could use to convert this to Region 4 please? Cheers....

VLC will play any region. You may also find firmware or software for your (computer) DVD player that will unlock regions.

Thanks for your responses but does anyone know of an application that will allow me to actually convert from Region 1 to 4 (and then I will use say DVD Flick to reburn the converted Region 4 image onto a new DVD to play in my DVD player)? Cheers

DVD decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/) removes all region codes and makes a new DVD as well.

It is also possible to convert many DVD players to "All Regions" if you know the codes to use on the remote control. I converted my Panasonic DVD player to "all regions" but had to borrow a special remote for that one.

A VCR repair service would probably know the answer. All this is presuming that you are not talking about a computer-based player.

Same here I made this bluray/dvd player I got from DSE an allzone, then typing in 7 digits on the remote, then turning it off. Now it plays any zoned DVD

Panasonic repair centers will convert to region free for free during the warranty period if you produce your receipt. after that i guess you have to pay a small fee..

You could google how to region free your particular model. Most players sold in NZ are already done, I guess the suppliers got tired of the problems. This is probably the most legitimate solution.

+1 for DVD shrink except it's quite old and doesn't work on all DVD's due to newer copy protection. Free though so worth a try.
DVD Decrypter is also old and more complicated to use than shrink.
DVD Fab is the newer version so it may do the job if those 2 fail.

AnyDVD is not free but will work if the others don't.
