My friend's laptop has been having issues with burning CDs, apparantly half the tracks don't work. Also it doesn't read dvds properly. One data dvd was working for a minute but then stopped loading as though it was heavily scratched. After ejection and reinsertion, it didn't load at all, it spun up a bit, then ejected saying there is no disc. Tried other dvds like a movie and a pcworld dvd, but they didn't load either, also saying no disc. Tried reformat, driver update, firmware update. Discs are not scratced, they're perfect. Device manager reported no problems. Running vista basic on aspire 5310. Drive is optiarc dvd burner AD-7560A. Also tried replacing the drive with a different model, but it doesn't work at all - cant even eject it, doesn't light up, doesn't show in BIOS or windows even after running a new hardware scan.

Try giving Acer a call 0800 223 769, you may find a new drive is not that expensive as it seems to be a popular model. Failing that, another option would be to get an external USB dvd-rw.

Have you tried cleaning the optical eye with a soft cotton bud (do it with caution though), you may find there is a film of dust or dirt over the eye which isnt helping it read discs correctly.
