ahh
1] when the laptop boots the display is clear but move the mouse to click on a user to login the display drops brightness & stays that way
2] when booting, even in Safe Mode get an error: APEX XarrayDB object evaluation period will expire...
3] can open the events viewer
4] won't open system restore error: The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log (0x81000202) -- but as noted before can't open the event log.

So, I thought I's start with HJT log & go from there:

Windows 7 SP1 (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=5842). Make sure you get the right download, for the version of Win7, you're using. It'll be one of the bottom 2. I would use something better than bitdefender

I researched this as well but it doesn't have Microsoft Visual Studio or
Microsoft visual C++ 2005

any suggestions on any of these:
1] when the laptop boots the display is clear but move the mouse to click on a user to login the display drops brightness & stays that way
3] can open the events viewer
4] won't open system restore error: The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log (0x81000202) -- but as noted before can't open the event log.

I would be running a check on the HDD.

it seems the lappie is booting into a restricted mode not safe mode but allot of the services are disable - almost all of them.

NZHawk

to remove the APEX XarrayDB
I followed the suggestion to remove any references of it in the registry and all seems fine on the boot.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions & guidance.
