I have problems, so does my computer running win XP pro. Yesterday the icons disappeared off the destop and the 'ALT, CNTL, DEL' thing stopped working (got that going with help from you guys). If i right click on the desktop nothing happens. Also program shortcuts are missing from the start menu and bits from the accessories folder are gone. If i use windows exporer and go to 'desktop' the shortcuts etc are there. I am only running one account on the computer. When i got home there were many error messages saying it couldn't read part of the hard drive or something like it. The hard drive is several years old. I have run a full boot up virus check. Any help appreciated

This is usually caused by the results of malware. Theres some real nasties about lately.

The error messages you are getting are false - they are malware infections.

I have run a full boot up virus check. What Antivirus ?? some of them wont pick up these infections.

Run Ccleaner fiirst, then Download Rkill (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill) & run it then Run Malwarebytes, and super antispyware to check for infections.

You can also download and run unhide (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe), sometimes takes a while, but all you desktop icons should reappear.

As for the missing start menu items, first change the view in the folder options, have a read of This here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html) - scroll down to XP.

ONCE thats done, navigate to C:\Document and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temp --- look for a folder called smtmp -- Inside that will be three folders, 1,2 &4 These folders will contain all the missing shortcuts/locations - some places say you simply copy them back to the original locations, and all will work, BUT sometimes it doesn't, or some applications still refuse to work even though the shortcuts are there.

If it doesn't work, you can try a repair install, sometimes it works, other times its save all your data and reinstall windows, programs etc.

Going from your comments -
The hard drive is several years old. wouldn't be a bad idea to reinstall anyway.

Bugger, ran out of time to edit again:) just found This article (http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=85715&st=0&p=434006&#entry434006) several other things you can try as well, #10 may fix the exe problems you "will" have.

PS: you need to run more than just Malwarebytes, while it is good, it doesn't get everything.

All those links that are missing are only just that - links to the original program, including the folders.

For example system restore.exe will still be in its original location C:\Windows\System32\Restore folder, just the links from the start menu are lost/damage or deleted/hidden.

Were the folders I mentioned before there - 1,2 & 4 ?????

1 = Start Menu Program shortcuts
2 = Current User Quick Start shortcuts
4 = All Users Desktop folders and shortcuts

If they are not there, then try a repair install -- But as previously mentioned, this doesn't always work/repair the damage done.

As far as I know there is no other way to fix it, unless you want to manually recreate the folders and all their links.

The folder isn't there. I guess the shortcuts aren't that important anyway. Thanks for all the help
