clean install windows xp home
boot reflects cpu fan error
cpu fan is operating smoothly

bios: American Megatrends v2.54
hardware monitor reflects:
cpu temp:109-114 F
mb temp: 104 F

CPU Fan speed: 1584 rpm
CPU Q-Fan control: disabled

do I need to be concerned about the "cpu fan error"?

You got it plugged into the CPU fan header on the motherboard or did you plug it accidentally in Chassis fan header or something? Is it 3 pin or 4 pin? Whats the number of pins on the board header?

When I had a fan going bad it would sometimes be slow to build up its speed. THe bios would report a problem (zero fan speed) because of the slow start, but by the time I could assess it would be running at a normal rate again.

Given that total fan failure will kill your system, I'd consider replacing it if you find further reason to suspect it.
