Hi Guys

Here's another freeware review for you.

First up is neat little app to help you get the fastest possible free DNS connection to\from your computer. It's called DNS Jumper (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Other-Internet-Related/Dns-Jumper.shtml). Once it's been found, a simple click will insert the correct numbers into your internet settings. You can even save your old setting by clicking another button. Certainly made a difference to my connection - let us know how you get on. Give it a go anyway.

My next suggestion adds another layer of security to your computer. It does NOT replace your existing anti-virus\anti-crapware etc but Secunia PSI scans your computer for any vulnerablities in your system and will download and install updates and\or patches. It can do it automatically or will ask for your permission first, depending on how you set it. Secunia PSI gives you a security rating. Ideally the target is 100%. First watch the Video (http://www.youtube.com/user/Secunia#p/a/u/0/t1rQib1Y-Pc) then download Secunia PSI (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/).

Best of all both are Free!!

Hi Zippity

As stated earlier all threads are auto locked after a certain period of inactivity.

While I'm an keen watcher of Press F1, I don't always log on. This certainly is not necessary to read other peoples threads which I enjoy. Guess F1 sees this as inactivity.

I don't mind if you or anyone else sees my previous threads so if the Moderator wishes they can unlock them. In fact, there have been many interesting debates which I thoroughly enjoyed!!

Remember someone, (tongue in cheek), suggesting I take money from the software providers I review. I don't. Not for reasons relating to morals but simply because no-one has offered me any!! If this is what you are worried about - relax. I simply recommend from time to time any freeware which have proved useful and others might enjoy too. It's up to you if you install them or not.

Hope this puts your mind at ease.

Perhaps Jen could explain what the current policy is. Or not as the case may be.

Perhaps Jen could explain what the current policy is.I'm not Jen, but as I understand it threads are autolocked after three months without a new post, in order to prevent necrobumping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump_(Internet)#Necrobumps).

Edit: Although one thread that really deserves a bump is this one (http://pressf1.co.nz/showthread.php?t=64128) :devil.

Agreed.

There again I am beginning to think that some threads get closed depending on the monthly cycle as in moons for example.

Hi Strommer

Thanks for the link to CNet. Appears the Editor is a fan of Secunia PSI as are most of their Users.

Have read a number of the User's opinions and are amazed by comments such as "this program should be on every computer". Couldn't agree more!! If in doubt how great this program is, give it a fair go for a week. If you are not a fan after one day, you never will be, so just uninstall it. It costs you nothing to find out. Be aware Secunia does send information about programs installed on your computer to their severs. It is quite clearly stated on install.

As for my experience with the program, Secunia quickly found a number of vulnerablities in my system. This came as a hellva surprise to me as I thought my efforts of updating software and drivers were pretty good. My Security Rating at the start was only 86%!! What was surpising too was the amount of outdated software on my computer. Now with Secunia PSI help I'm scoring 100%.

For anyone doubting this program, consider this. Would your system score a 100% Security Rating right now. To get this all software has to be updated and patched, with no outdated programs. If not, your system is open for attack. Suggest you go to Strommer's CNet Link and read what others say about Secuia.

So basically this is an extra layer of bloat? doesn't Windows update do exactly the same thing?

I've had Secunia on my laptop for a while. It's been good and although I don't always update what it suggests (sometimes you can't if its a no-longer supported programme)its a good reminder. Better than File Hippo Update Checker which I use on another PC.

Hi Deimos

Secunia PSI is not an extra layer of bloat but is an extra layer of security.
Perhaps you don't understand what this program does. True, it brings your attention to any System Files that need updating but it does more than this. It scans your whole system for any known vulnerabilities a hacker could use. This could come from obscure or unpatched software. Secunia then shows you where the problem is and can automatically update them depending on your settings. If for some reason, like in a case of some drivers, Secunia will give you the link to the required website so you can manually download the update. Windows update simply is interested in Microsoft Software.

Suggest you give Secunia PSI a go, the next computer it saves might be yours!!
