I am finding in my day to day work that I would greatly benefit from a third screen.

What is the easiest way to hook a laptop (with a basic vga connection) to three screens (Laptop +2) while making it a extended desktop not a clone?

Probably some kind of USB adapter, with video connections on it

Hi mate, I have an interesting issue at present...New ultra laptop for the boss, Sony Vaio, latest SB model.....we wish to drive 2 x 16x10 external LCD, from docking station....both Laptop GPUs have resolution capabilities for matrox dualhead, however their is apparently some earthing interference on this model, so I get blurry horizontal line on the lcd...

We are obviously taking the unit back, and now have to start looking again!..

Anyway, 2 x external LCDs, you could use $380 matrox dualhead to go, however the laptop gpu needs to be capable of the end res, they have testing tool, or you could use a USB adapter like i do...

Have dual head card driving 2 x 16x10 and usb adapter for 17 inch lcd

I doubt I could get IT to sign off on a $400 piece of kit to make it work.

Have to be the USB adapters then, $125, but make sure to get a DVI output if you want 19x12 resolution

I asked for a DVI, all the monitors have DVI and the lappy has USB so it will work fine.
I wasn't thinking initially and thought the lack of DVI on the laptop might affect it but why should it.
