I set up a secondhand router (from me :p) for a friend during the weekend. I couldn't find the ISP password so simply plugged in the old modem into the router and switched the router to bridged mode only. Now she's saying the desktop PC's internet connection keeps dropping out (plugged in with an Ethernet cable), but the laptops are fine (connected wirelessly). I had the same issue when I plugged my netbook in with a cable, but it was fine when connected wirelessly. I have no idea what the problem could be, could anyone enlighten me? :badpc:

something wrong with the cable or the socket on the router maybe

Check the contacts for dirt

Plausible, but my PC and the desktop were both plugged in at the same time, and my PC was using a previously unused cable...

EDIT: And I've just been informed she was just able to send an email she was trying to send since yesterday :p

*bump*

Any more suggestions? I'll probably bypass the problem by putting a wireless card in the desktop, but I'd like to get it fixed...

What model is the router, does it have a switch inbuilt?

Haha I like these problems, when I'm on the other side of them :)

1. So, is the 'new' router you provided providing the wireless service?
2. I assume the old modem is being used just as a modem?
3. When you plug a PC into the 'new' router, does the PC say network cable unplugged? Limited connectivity? Get an IP?

Whoops, missed the thing about two devices and bridged mode...

Have you tried not doing it that way? (Just call the ISP and get the damn password!)

Use Internet Explorer and Revelation from snadboy.com... ;)

What the heck is Revelation from Snadboy?

(And the download link gives a 404 error too)

Guess I'll have to take my netbook around again and have a play :D

Cool, good answers.

Try:

tracert -d 60.234.1.1
from the command prompt and see how far the trace gets. Thats going out to Orcons DNS server.

How are the two devices connected to each other, is there a separate network between them?

The modem and router are connected to each other with an Ethernet cable. The only other Ethernet-connected device is the desktop PC itself - both laptops are connected wirelessly.

Success (so far)! :D Got the password off the old modem (thanks Chill ;)) and the router is now online. :D

;-) Useful trick that is!
