We backup files, but if a virus gets into one's computer, what's to stop it getting into the backup too?

Nothing. The backups can also be infected. Make sure you have decent AV and is up to date and running real-time scanning + full scans on weekly basis...

depends on the type of backup, it's unlikely an infection would find it's way into an existing system image file for example but it will get backed up with everything else with system restore and also any scheduled backups that occur after the infection. Any write enabled folder on your system could theoretically get infected.

It's almost funny in a way but you can remove a virus from your system then get it back by reverting to an earlier backup from when you were infected....

Write your backups onto Write-once type media eg CD or DVD and finalize the discs - then they are impervious to any future virus getting into them.
