View Full Version : Using kitty litter as silica desiccant?

Bit over a year ago I put two 1.5TB HDDs into a plastic box and put it in off-site storage, using some crystal kitty litter as desiccant. I checked on it today. The drives were fine but some paper in the box (Explorer screen shots) were less than totally dry - perhaps 3 on a 1 to 5 scale of dryness. The silica had increased in weight by 0.9g.

Has anyone else had experience of this? Should I have crushed the crystals? What increase in weight should I expect? The box volume was equal to 3 x 3.5" drives. The storage location was outside but not exposed to rain (think garden shed)

The garden shed might be rain proof but will not stop the damp caused by Wellington's fog, mist and damp caused by the cold and damp whether.

Why not secret the drives in the hot water cupboard?
