The temp folder of the restore directory on my windows me machine is showing more than 1 gigabyte of data. Can I safely delete some of this information, and is there a way to prevent it stockpiling to such an extent?

These old files are remnants of previous working files, zip extractions, system crashes and other files used temporarily by the system and then discarded. These files are all safe to delete.

Windows has its own ?disk cleanup? utility which will search for and remove these files, located in the system tools menu on the start menu. If you can not see it there you may need to go to add/remove windows components applet in the control panel and install it. An alternative is to make a new entry in the autoexec.bat file, 'deltree c:\temp /y'. This will remove all files from this folder at startup. . Otherwise remain vigilant and regularly clean out this directory.
