View Full Version : Any way to stop Skyping?

I'm asking a question where I think I already know the answer but in desperation I'll ask.

We run a Hostel - two floors, and have a wireless modem on each floor for tenants to surf. No other programming, etc. Unfortunately some of our tenants Skype non-stop to their homeland, with the effect that our bandwith is gone within days. Each modem is running on a 20 Gig Telecom plan.

Any way to stop people Skyping? I don't think so, but it's worth an ask.

Googling doesn't look hopeful without a lot of hastle for you:

You can, but not with the el-cheapo modems you're supplied by Telecom.

I suggest you disable the WiFi on that router, and get yourself either a Linksys WRT54GL or an Accton MR3201 router, and pop Gargoyle onto it.

Not only can you then set quotas per-machine, but you can also block certain ports. Granted that's a bit of a PITA for Skype as it falls back to Port 80 and Port 443, but I'm sure some blocking of certain DNS address could also work?

Is uninstalling Skype not an option?

Not if it's not on your PC ;)

Stick a firewall between the modem and the network, block the program from using the ports.

Thats just it, it uses Port 80 and Port 443 ... Block that and you block web browsing traffic and secure SSL connections :-/

could you use the firewall to block all the IPs which skype connects to when it logs in?

Cancel the wifi altogether and tell tenants to go to McDonalds.

Hence my suggestion for Gargoyle. It does *all* of the above, including per-device bandwidth allowances so you *could* bill them accurately :)
