I have a IBM Intelistation M Pro (1.5gb RAM 3.4ghz P4) that sometimes gets BSOD for a split second and then restarts (also does this without BSOD). I can here the CPU fan struggling. It has no other cooling devices (fans heats sinks, liquid cooling etc). The only thing I can think of is that it is running hot or PSU failure. Any ideas?

BTW: XP PRO SP2 (tried safe mode and it got BSOD)

You can see the BSOD error for longer by pressing F8 during boot , then selecting turn off automatic restart after system failure.

@ speedy can't won't even boot gets to log on and BSOD. I think it's running hot as it is 55+ idle in the BIOS.

The case at the moment is about as hot as my laptop after 2hrs on load (not idle like the desktop).

Remove the cpu/heatsink and put some more paste on it. If you havent yet. Remove the hdd and put it in another PC. Then scan it

Haven't got any on hand but will do ASAP. I'll try to get the STOP error for you as well.

Gets to logon??
You stop it rebooting long before this stage. You can stop it at the menu after it reboots,

Tried @ various screens pre OS.

I have it standing on it's side with the top off and it will run everything. The case must have some serious airflow issues.

Is or was this on the net?? It looks like 0x0000008E, 0xc0000005,(the first part of this stop error, can be caused by rustock.b a backdoor trojan / rootkit)

I would (if you can), remove the hdd then scan it with a virus scanner. Or use something like trojan remover

I reinstalled windows and now is getting usbport.sys blue screen. Also with driver_irql_not_less_or_equal error messages. Any ideas?

Sounds like a stuffed cd or corrupt hdd, if you reinstalled Windows, and nothing else. And its still blue screening. Did you do a clean install? Did you install SP3?
If you reinstalled XP?

What stop error is it showing now with that file? Did you install SP3 from a flash drive? What USB devices are plugged into the USB port/s?

A mouse has been in the usb port and once a usb drive. SP3 installed off a CD (home-burnt). Will get stop error. It is now more consistent by showing the same/similar errors each time.

ALSO-Yesterday the pc shutdown and restart and had "PSU Power Restored" in the POST screen along with the error 8603 or whatever that means change the battery. No blue screen was shown and the pc is programed in the BIOS to restart after power failure. Restart after system crash was off. Could this be linked or a separate problem.

Could be a faulty PSU. Check it / and the power cables
