Could be overheating. Does it beep or anything?

I take it its going by power? Only thing I can think of its overheating. It may need a clean out

Do the fans turn off?

Have you tried removing the battery?

The green light usually means its got power, normally via the mains. Unplug the power from the laptop and it should go out.

If it shuts down right away (fans etc) and stays off, it may have a blown Motherboard = $$$$ unless its still under warranty. Over heating, even with clogged ducts it should try to boot and at least get some sort of display, even for a minute.

would it be at the back or under the keyboard?

You can try the bottom option :p (http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-175136-acer-won-t-boot-in-anything)

Looks like its got a habit of not turning on (http://www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&client=opera&hs=Cs0&rls=en&&sa=X&ei=l6n0TNzjCMOlcLD4mdkE&ved=0CBQQvwUoAQ&q=acer+aspire+4520+won%27t+boot&spell=1)

Yes it shuts down after 2 or 3 seconds and turns off.Would it be worth buying it off him if it was a blown motherboard?
