There are a variety of programs (http://3d2f.com/tags/tracking/stolen/laptop/) that will send an email to the owner of a stolen laptop, giving information that can be used to trace the laptop. Which program is the best?

Adeona (http://adeona.cs.washington.edu/)looks good but it does not work on Win7 and only snaps a photo (of the thief) with Mac laptops.

Thanks for your help.

I have Prey installed on my 3 personal computers. Works well on the testing I have done and free for 3 clients per account. Also works on Mac.

Please read my post again.
Our laptop is not stolen!

I am simply asking what program is best to use and gave two URLs as examples.
My plan is to install a program, just in case some time in the future a thief gets it.

On the Adeona page, Win7 is not listed, but I may give it a try anyhow because I did not see on the Adeona page that Win7 will NOT work.

I didn't say it was just gave a good example of what can be done. Go back and look at that link and you will find out how.

If anyone's stupid enough to steal a laptop then use it without a format/reinstall then.. lol?

OK Mike, but my post had the same info as in your link.

Anyhow, I guess no one on PF1 is using such software and cannot recommend one to use.

inphinity - there are a lot of stupid people around, especially thieves; I doubt if they would know how to format a computer or even know what the word means.

Thieves & people receiving stolen goods are not known for their intelligence

When we got a laptop through flexirent, there was a phone home program with it, and it sent an email to the owner of said laptop if it was stolen giving the ip address, so you had something to take to the police. Will see if I can find the name of it tomorrow

And there is where the scheme will fall over
There are plenty of complaints re the Police not having time & refusing to investigate these smaller crimes, even when a physical address is supplied.

Oh ok, well I just thought it was an awesome idea. So if you still want to know the name, let me know, but maybe a waste of time if no one will help find it. I just thought it was a better idea than a picture, as you have to know the person to make a pic work, but with the isp address, that relates to a physical place.

With Prey http://preyproject.com/ you can take a picture, get the IP address and if possible GPS location (if device supports), lock the computer so it has to be formatted to be used again. If you get the laptop back just take the lock off yourself and you're using it again.

It's not going to stop the smart ones but may help catch the dummies :)

And the Police down south here do follow up.

Thanks. Sorry - I don't know how I missed your post.
If Prey does in fact snap a pic and email it back to the owner, it will be installed

As far as I can see, all of the programs on that page are for webcam monitoring, not for recovering stolen laptops.
