I'm living in Arizona USA and this forum is one of the best for PC's. My question is New Zealand. Are your servers in New Zealand because I always thought that most of the forums were just global and not to base from anywhere. So is every forum base somewhere because I found a lot of UK forum that I didn't know that they were from the UK. So I'm in Arizona USA, should I take a look at where all the forums are at. I ask this forum about the Internet without knowing its location so where should I look to see where a forum is at? Boy I don't mean to sound stupid but I just don't know.

Is there any reason why you need to know where the servers are, (I don't know anyway). So long as the forum works what does it matter

As far as I know PF1 servers are located in NZ, Auckland to be more precise.

If you ping their Name, you get the IP address of 210.48.100.45 - which is Shown Here (http://urldogg.com/210.48.100.45).

Last I heard, NZ PC World (FairFax BM) hosts the servers themselves.

It doesn't really matter where forum servers are located, as long as you are aware of what currency is being quoted and that local shops will be mentioned as most will assume a member is from NZ unless otherwise stated.

According to The map (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/Outside1290199734.jpg) when zoomed in, its outside as well by the looks. May explain why sometimes when theres bad weather the servers play up. :p

A good way to find out where a server is located, is the Windows tracert command.

Open up CMD and simply type
tracert pressf1.co.nz

It will then trace where your connection is going through to get to the end website. The very last ones are the things you're looking for. E.g. for pressf1.co.nz it brings up

I had the impression from years ago that our "Speedy" was a resident there. This was shattered when a poster wrote that he had seen "Speedy" walking on a street somewhere.
Could it be that he is let out now and again for looking after the PF1 servers AND helping so very many people on PF!.?

Location of a server might matter though depending on a searcher's query, and from what country/or Google search domain/and what local language. For example PC World Com might have servers/domains registered in various countries, which will have a further reach.

Google is heavily into local search query (e.g. place pages for offline businesses/and local language/translation) for specific regions/country. A search query might direct to a local server in that region or adjacent country and may not show pressF1 (unless NZ is included in search sometimes) - depending on the number of local similar forums or the intent/language/top level domain presence (com, org vs .co.nz.). But generally country specific searches will show press F1 (if NZ is used in query), since I think it's the only (authoritative) computer forum/domain in NZ.

...Iconz (http://www.iconz.net/) being the host.Er... not actually hosted by iconz, the server just happens to be routing via their network. I can't remember if iconz is their ISP or an intermediary though.

It's the ISP.

Flagfox (an add-on for Firefox) will display the flag of the country in which the site is hosted at the right of the address bar. Seems to work well.
