View Full Version : Strange message on Win2000 startup

When my Win2000 PC starts up, as the boot process finishes the New Hardware Wizard pops up and wants to install drivers for a 'PCI Simple Communications Controller'. To date I have just cancelled out and everything seems to be working OK. I have looked everywhere for an answer, including searching the Win help files and on the Net but can't find what this is.

What does it do and should I let it be installed?

It will be a modem.

Prehaps one that is integrated into the motherboard, if you already have another.

I think the 'simple' refers to the fact that it is a software based one.

It is probably quite safe to let it install, as all it is is a 'controller' - basically a piece of hardware that's there to drive another piece of hardware (quite often the same piece of hardware LOL). Having it installed shouldn't make any difference to your system, except that you won't get that message everytime you startup. Perhaps if it does give you trouble, find it in the system properties, and select 'Disable in this hardware profile'.
