Ah, not quite...
It's only the Metacity window manager that Unity replaces.

Indeed, gnome-shell seems to be not the way they want to go.
There will still be a whole-lotta-gnome there for some time yet though.

Sounds less community, more corporate with every release.

It's both.

When you're the one who owns a company that's footing the support / development bill, you get a little bit of leeway to do what you want ;)
