when you buy a eSATA drive is it that important to buy one with a 7200 rpm vs. 5400 when your paying 50% more for it? When you buy a eSATA drive I understand that it comes with a short data cable so you have to buy a long one so you can put it on your desk. Is this just another way of adding to the price?

The 7200rpm drives will perform faster than the 5400rpm drives, and likely use more power. So, if performance matters, yes you want 7200rpm. If performance isn't important to you, then it doesn't matter.
