The amount of RAM you put in will depend on the operating system you are going to use.

Probably 64 bit. im planning to run the latset games that are (hopefully) 64 bit optimized. as for budget im doing this long term. ordering the parts one at a time so im not to concerned with budget but lower priced solutions are welcome.

I'd say go for 2x4gb 1666mhz sticks and run them in dual channel

Well if money was no object then get two GTX480s for around $1600.

If you're after a good price/performance spot, GTX460 1GB and 4GB RAM. Grab an SSD as well.

The new radeon 6000 series announced tomorrow would also be worth considering.

At least for a month or so they won't be. Playtech's pre-order prices for the 6850 and 6870 are $400 and $500 respectively. They're designed to compete against GTX 460 798MB and 1GB, not the GTX 470 and 480.

Just wait till the 6950 and 6970 comes out, they're the cards ATI will be rolling out to topple the GTX 470 and 480.

The HD 6870 sits between the HD5850 and HD 5870 so is probably around the GTX470 level, definitely above the GTX460 and "possibly" a very good overclocker.
