Hi there folks!

Just thought I'd post here because my Googling isn't turning up many results, in the hopes that my computer issues can be aided by you fine people.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit.

First up... I uninstalled some things using Revo Uninstaller Pro, and might've indiscriminately clicked to delete some registry items in the subsequent windows - I uninstalled YIM and Adobe Flash.

Some time after that, quite a few things started going wrong. First up and most obviously, my sound stopped working. There's no levels coming through the mixer, and in Safe Mode it says some Hardware Changes may have gone undetected. Doesn't fix anything.

Next up, I can't click anything to open it in Control Panel. I can switch between Control Panel windows, but to open the various items I have to run them from cmd.exe, etc. It's a similar deal with the Action Center in the system tray.

In the system tray, the network icon shows up as not being connected to a network and not being able to find one, but I can connect to the internet in most cases fine.

I've run virus scans with AVG, avast, Malware-bytes and Microsoft Security Essentials. I can't update MSE, however, receiving a Class Not Registered error. No viruses to be found.

Now when it comes to system restoration... Revo set a couple of system restore points, as it usually does. However, when I go to System Restore, I receive an error saying "System Restore does not appear to be functioning on this system... A Volume Shadow Copy Service Component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application Event Log for more information. (0x80042302)"

Does this sound like a virus at work, or just my own misguided actions? Is there much I can do on my end, or do I need to backup what data I keep on my laptop and take it in to be cleaned up and reinstalled? Do you need any more info from me?

Thanks heaps if you can help!

Speedy Gonzales

Get rid of AVG and Avast. You should only have one AV program. Post a hijackthis log. Or get teamviewer. And I can check it out from here (to be safe boot into safe mode / networking, if you can get online in safe mode / NW).

Alrighty, logfile beneath. Will be uninstalling AVG and avast later - though I'm hesitant to do that at the moment simply because I have no idea what's going on with MSE, etc.

I'll have my external (and a relatively recent backup on it) back soon, hopefully that'll work, but if System Restore isn't working I'm doubtful that it would even initiate. Eugh.

Cheers for the offer to check it out on your end, might see if you can make heads or tails of the stuff below etc. before that, though. :D

Edit: Also got an error whilst getting the log, http://i56.tinypic.com/epert3.jpg

You can tick these, then tick fix checked

Close browsers (or delete the entries in tools / startup in ccleaner, if you've got it)

Uninstall Mcafee as well

I uninstalled I uninstalled YIM and Adobe Flash.

Some time after that, quite a few things started going wrong.

Co-incidence? Removing those, reg entries or not shouldn't have caused a problem.

Remove your sound device and reinstall it.

If you get any more system problems you can do a repair install. or a Scannow SFC.

I can't open Add/Remove Programs via Control Panel, and when I run appwiz.cpl via the Run prompt, nothing appears.

Does it go by another name in windows 7?

Running on a laptop, so physical removal is a bit of an issue... as for reinstalling it, I've been looking for the drivers but HP's driver update site is a pain to use, and I've tried updating via Device Manager but it says it's all up to date.

Hah... Can't uninstall from there, it seems. "An error occurred while trying to uninstall X. It may have already been uninstalled." Tried this with 3 different programs. No dice.

Apparently HP has a recovery partition set aside... should I backup what data I can and try to use that? Can't really think of anything else I can do.

If you do decide to start again, you're better off borrowing a Windows 7 disc and starting from scratch, as the recovery partition puts on all kinds of junk as well.

You can reboot and press a function key to restore the system. Or create the cd's / dvd from the menu.

Only thing is, everything will go byebyes. If you're going to back up whatever, you can only save docs / emails. You'll have to reinstall whatever programs (apart from what the restore partition restores) again

Get ccleaner and see if that can uninstall all of the AV programs except one of them

Alrighty, I've uninstalled AVG, McAfee, and Avast with CCleaner - tried uninstalling Age of Empires to see what would happen, threw up an error about not being able to open Windows Uninstaller, or something.

I don't actually have that much stuff I want to save in terms of documents etc (maybe 15 gigs or so), and programs can be easily retrieved. Anyone have an idea of how I can sort out my sound, incorrect system tray icons and various class not registered errors? Or would it be a better idea to borrow a Windows 7 disc/boot from the recovery partition?

Speedy Gonzales

If you borrow a windows 7 dvd, (depending on the version), the key you have may not work. Doing a clean install will probably fix the class not registered errors. WHAT exactly is giving this error? Incorrect system tray icons like what?? WHAT's wrong with the sound?? Doesn't it work?

I'm not sure I can do a clean install - I don't have a disc of my own, one didn't come with my laptop, and I'm not going to buy a new one when this computer is still on Flexirent.

A lot of things are giving the errors - such as Windows Photo Viewer, Microsoft Security Essentials (when I try to update), and a few others which I can't remember at this point in time.

In the system tray... my wireless signal icon has a cross beside it, but nothing seems to be wrong with it. My network icon says it's not connected to anything and there's nothing to connect to, but when I click on it, I'm connected to my wireless router fine.

There's also the Action Center icon - I can't open it (clicking on "open action center" brings nothing), but there are various messages like Turn on Windows Defender - can you do that with MSE installed? And clicking on the messages brings up the little clock, and then nothing.

As for sound... the hardware is there, in Device Manager, and says it's working fine. It says the drivers are up to date, so won't install anything new there. But no sound is coming out - it's not even showing up as levels when I have the volume tab open.

Well if its on flexirent, take it back and tell them its stuffed. And replace it. MSE if its installed, is meant to disable windows defender. You should be able to create the dvd / cd's if its got a restore partition. Only thing is the crap that came with it will be back on the hdd lol. Like I said the other day I can check it out with teamviewer, if its on the net

Just reading though your original post. If you selected ALL without looking at the entries bought up, you may have deleted a whole section of the Registry, which could explain the behavior you are experiencing. I suspect a reinstall is the only way to fix this. Hope you have your data backed up.
